9 Local Dog-Friendly Places to Take Your Pup


If you’re a dog owner, you are probably always looking for new places for your canine to enjoy. The weather outside is perfect for your dog to get some much needed exercise and there are some great places in southeast Michigan that welcome man’s best friend.

Here are nine places in Metro Detroit that are sure to guarantee you and your pooch a good time.

Dog Parks

Swift Run Dog Park

The Swift Run Dog Park features a 10 acre grassy field with separate fenced runs for large and small dogs. The park is located on Ellsworth Road in Ann Arbor.

Anne Fracassa Memorial Dog Park

This one-acre dog park in Warren features a water spigot, pooper-scooper bags, park benches, and secure access. It costs $10 for Warren residents and $20 for nonresidents. The dog park is located at the southwest corner of Burdi Park on Pauline Street and 12 Mile Road in Warren.

Orion Oaks Dog Park

Orion Oaks Dog Park features a 24-acre fenced area with two trails, a picnic shelter, a section for small dogs, and access to Lake Sixteen for dogs to swim in. The park is located on Joslyn Road, between Clarkston and Scripps Roads.

Dog Friendly Restaurants

Traffic Jam and Snug

Traffic Jam and Snug in Detroit offers homemade breads, cheeses, ice cream and beer. Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables.

Cafe Via

The American bistro located in downtown Birmingham, welcomes dogs with their owners on the outside patio.

Gratzi

Right on Main Street in downtown Ann Arbor, the Italian restaurant Gratzi features fine eating options and dogs can enjoy the outdoor patio.

Aut Bar

Located on Braun Court in Ann Arbor, Aut Bar has plenty of great bar food and happy hour specials. The outdoor seating area is welcome to dogs and servers bring water dishes.

Dog Friendly Beaches

Brighton Recreation Area

The almost 5,000 acre Brighton Recreation Area has plenty of room for you and your dog to go adventuring. There are hills, hiking paths, equestrian riding, mountain biking, and numerous lakes in the area. There is a pet-friendly section of shoreline available on Chilion Pond and dogs must be kept on a six-foot leash.

Mill Pond Dog Park

The 54-acre Mill Pond Park features an off-leash dog park that has river access for all dogs to enjoy. Other park amenities include open wooded areas, soccer fields, nature trails, and plenty of open space. The park is located on the north side of Michigan Avenue, with the entrance between Bennett Street and Mill Road.
