5 Fun-Filled Local Festivals in August

August is like the Sunday of the summer months; it’s the last month before the fall weather starts to kick in, kids will be getting back to school, and the summer getaways will have to wait until next year. Lucky for you, the communities in the metro Detroit area have plenty of festivals for you and your family to enjoy before getting back into that fall routine.

Here are five festivals and fairs we think your family will enjoy in August:

Blues, Brews, & BBQ in Westland

The award winning festival returns to Westland for another year of great live music, a wide range of beers, and some of the best authentic BBQ food in southeast Michigan. The free event will be held at the Thomas H. Brown Central City Park starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 5. The fair continues on August 6 at 11 a.m. and will conclude with fireworks at 10 p.m.

Dearborn Homecoming Festival

The 37th annual Dearborn Homecoming Festival will take place at Ford Field Park on Friday, August 5 through Sunday, August 7. The three day event will have live music, food, a car cruise, a carnival, family activities, and fireworks on Saturday and Sunday. This year’s festival will also feature a family-friendly bike ride on Saturday morning, kayaking and canoeing Saturday afternoon, and a 5K Fun Run on Sunday.

Dexter Daze

Dexter Daze has been a staple in the Dexter community for over 40 years and will return on Friday, August 12. The two-day event features live music, a classic car show, crafters, and a community parade. Some of this year’s highlights include a horseshoe tournament, a farmers market, and a Chalk the Block competition where artists use chalk to create works of art in the street.

DIYpsi Indie Art Fair

The DIYpsi Indie Art Fair happens twice a year, once in the summer and again in the winter, with this year’s summer festivities taking place on Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28. The homemade art fair showcases over 80 of the region’s best independent artists  and unique food and drink options.

Chelsea Community Fair

The 79th annual Chelsea Community Fair runs from Sunday, August 21 until Saturday, August 27. The fair has a ton of free events to enjoy over the seven days, with main events including the Demolition Derby, Tractor Pulls, and the Chelsea Fair Queen Program. There’s plenty of things to do for the whole family, so be sure to check the schedule on the website and head to downtown Chelsea for some summer fun.
