How It Works

First thing to know is that the boats that will be racing across the Detroit River this weekend are actually called hydroplanes. Think of what happens to your car tires when you hydroplane on a wet road, this is the same concept. Hydroplanes have been around since the 1920s and are designed to lift over the water for maximum speed. Rather being designed for buoyancy like most boats are, hydroplanes are designed to skim over the top of the water and sometimes even appear to glide. The fastest hydroplanes feature a 3,000 horsepower turbine engine reaching 200 miles per hour, and create a 300 foot long wall of water during the race.

The Races

This year’s Hydrofest is part of the H1 Unlimited Hydroplane Racing series, which features the fastest circuit racing boats in the world. Each hydroplane must qualify for heat races at 130 mph or higher.

Detroit’s Hydrofest races are known on the H1 Unlimited Race circuit for the “Roostertail Turn.” The turn gets it name because when the hydroplanes go through the turn, their spray is reminiscent of a rooster’s tail. A perfect place to see this turn is at the appropriately titled waterfront club, Roostertail

The stage is set for an entertaining weekend at this year’s Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Hydrofest! Whether you’re going to enjoy the last bit of summer on the river or to see all of the exciting hydroplane races, there’s no reason to miss out!
