Calling all Michiganders… It’s time to camp!

The moon is high in the night sky, the fire crackles merrily and your kids laugh with glee as they toast marshmallows for s’mores. You sit, cold beverage in hand, listening to the chirping of the crickets and the sound of the occasional mosquito-killing slap… No doubt about it, you are camping!
Two things that Michigan has in abundance are water and trees. And camping goes with water and trees like peanut butter goes with jelly. They are a perfect match. If you are like a lot of Metro Detroiters (myself included), you long for Friday afternoon to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the workweek and morph into the life of a camper.
Whether you like to rough it in a tent or camp in the comfort of an RV is really just a personal preference. However, there is something great to be said for both methods.
Tent camping allows you to “get back to nature”. Sleeping on the ground with only the thin lining of the tent between you and the earth (unless you bring a blow up mattress). Cooking on the open fire (unless your campground has grills). Living off what your cooler can hold (unless there is a store in your campground). You see where I am going with this. Tent camping can be as rustic or comfortable as you want it to be. But it is a very personal experience.
RV camping is a bit of a different animal. It is more like camping in style. Some self-proclaimed “true campers” thumb their nose at the RV lifestyle. But I will tell you from personal experience, it is GREAT when you have young kids! My husband and I were avid tent campers. Loved every bit of it. Then we had our two boys 15 months apart. I was not about to take those darling, but loud babies into a tent campground. Not if I valued my sanity and was also conscious of those sleeping around us. So, we invested in a pull behind RV and have been happy campers ever since!
Whichever way you decide to go, there are a multitude of campgrounds and RV parks where you can stay. For a lot of people, when they think of camping, they immediately think Up North. However, what many people don’t realize is that there are a ton of campgrounds and RV parks right in the Metro Detroit Area!
Check out this awesome link from Pure Michigan that offers access to over 40 different tent and RV campgrounds within 50 miles of Detroit! http://www.michigan.org/places-to-stay/campgrounds/
I wish you happy camping! Now if you will excuse me… I need to get packing for our trip to the campground this weekend!
