The metro Detroit area often proudly celebrates its diverse culture with events, ceremonies and other festivities, and this Saturday, Feb. 6 is no different. Dhamaal 2016, a nonprofit event, takes place for the first time at the Music Hall Center for Performing Arts in Detroit. The competition pits eight intercollegiate South Asian dance teams against each other, and showcases performances by three exhibition teams.
The word “Dhamaal” itself means “uproar,” and the show plans on bringing that raucous, fun Bollywood-inspired energy to Detroit. Of the eight teams competing, three are from Michigan, with the remainder from Ohio, Wisconsin, Maryland and Illinois. Six universities are represented in the competition – including Michigan State University (Go Green!) and the University of Michigan!
The teams combine Bollywood film dance with Western fusion dance, and have a chance to win prizes, as well as bragging rights. In addition, the three local exhibition teams will showcase other talents throughout the night. The opening act is a bhangra dance team, which is a specific style of Indian dance from the state of Punjab. An a capella group and a fusion dance team from Wayne State University will also perform. The show is open to all ages and there is a semiformal dress code.
“Men are expected to wear a button up shirt and slacks or khakis. Women should wear dresses, or dress pants with a business casual top,” Singh said. “For many of the Indian women, they prefer to wear traditional clothing, which is completely acceptable.”
Tickets for the event cost $15 for regular admission, $12 for students and $10 for children ages 10 and younger and seniors ages 65 and older. Tickets are available online before the event, or at the door. Proceeds from the event will be donated to Mai Family Services, a nonprofit organization that helps Asian Indian victims of domestic abuse in southeast Michigan.
Attendees can also enjoy refreshments and a cash bar. This is a great opportunity for the residents of metro Detroit to experience new cultures, or celebrate their own. Be sure to check out Dhamaal this weekend!
