Disrupt! Professionals Buck the Norm and Flourish in Co-Working Spaces

“I think it’s a great time to be an entrepreneur in Detroit.”

Amanda Lewan, co-founder of Bamboo Detroit, is helping entrepreneurs get their feet settled in the Detroit business landscape with her co-working space. Bamboo was the first co-working space in Detroit when it opened its doors four years ago and is a place where entrepreneurs can come and use an affordable, temporary office space for their needs.

Lewan, and three other entrepreneurs she was working with at the time, had the goal of creating an engaging, affordable, and inclusive co-working space for all small businesses.

“Our first location was 1442 Brush St., and it was a very small place,” Lewan said. “We had a great relationship with the community and threw a lot of events, and we grew through because of that.”

Bamboo began hearing demands that they needed more private options, so they ended up moving and expanding to their new location this past January. There’s even more plans to expand in the near future.

The modern layout features all the resources an entrepreneur will need to get started in the community. Bamboo also hosts free or low cost events regularly to help businesses network and get connected to downtown Detroit. Be sure to apply and set up a tour today to see everything Bamboo has to offer.

Bamboo isn’t the only co-working space in the area, however. Several co-working spaces have popped up in Detroit and are helping entrepreneurs to flourish in the Detroit business world.

One of those co-working spaces is WeWork Detroit. Designed to inspire original ideas and organic networking, WeWork is a co-working space that offers both private offices and shared desks. With locations at Campus Martius and Merchant’s Row, entrepreneurs can be right in the middle of everything the Detroit business landscape has to offer.

For those looking for a creative space to go develop creative concepts, Ponyride might be just what you’re looking for. Located in Corktown, the space is meant to inspire artists and creative entrepreneurs to come together to create unique pieces of art. You can book tours or events to see if the space is for you, or browse through their Facebook page  to look at all the events they have going on.

An Office in Detroit is exactly what you think it is: an office in Detroit. The described “small space in a big building” allows entrepreneurs to host conference room meetings along with other office amenities. It’s an area that offers all the necessities, like plenty of desk space, comfortable seats, fast wi-fi and more.

Lastly, one half office, the other half coffee shop, The Office Coffee Shop offers guests the opportunity to rent private offices, tables, networking event space and more. Or, just a nice place to enjoy a public coffee shop. Whether you need a space to rent out or just a place to meet some co-workers for coffee, the Office Coffee Shop has you covered.

Lewan strongly believes that the city of Detroit is a great place to start a business because of how engaged and supportive the community is, and these co-working spaces show just that.
