There is nothing better than summertime in Michigan. We have the sunshine, the warmth, the scenery and the activities (winter is another story). One activity that you might not even realize is available is free movies in the park. Several cities offer screenings throughout the summer. Check them out!
Downtown Ferndale is always full of activities, and on the third Thursday of the month in July, August and September, it will host its annual Outdoor Movies on Vester Street event. “The Sandlot,” a classic film in my opinion, probably a cult classic in others’ opinions, plays on July 21. Disney/Pixar’s “Cars” screens on Aug. 18 and “The Princess Bride” plays on Sept. 15.
Grab your lawn chair or blanket and head to South Lyon’s McHattie Park this summer. The park will prop up a 24-foot inflatable screen. The event begins on Saturday, June 25 with “Ghostbusters.” On Saturday, July 30, attendees can enjoy “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” and on Saturday, Aug. 20 it’s everybody’s favorite “Grease.” All movies begin at dusk.
Downtown Rochester hosts it Movies in the Moonlight Event on July 16, July 23, July 30 and Aug. 6. Movies such as the 2015 version of “Cinderella,” “Jurassic World,” “Hotel Transylvania 2” and the blockbuster film “Star Wars – The Force Awakens” will be shown.
Head down to the Battle Alley in downtown Holly, as it will play six movies underneath the stars in June, July and August. The series began on June 11 and continues every other Saturday until Aug. 27. Movies such as “Minions,” “Annie” (1982 version), “Inside Out” and more are on the schedule.
A few other cities hosting free outdoor movie events include Birmingham, Clawson and Lake Orion. Be sure to take the whole family or go with a group of friends and enjoy this summer!
