Volunteers under the drive of a nonprofit organization have turned an unused plot of land on Detroit’s North End into a community farmland that produces food for anyone and everyone in the community, and it’s free!
The organization is known as the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative (MUFI), and is an all-volunteer organization with the goal of creating an alternative redevelopment option for urban areas. By using agriculture as a platform, they aim to promote education, sustainability, and a sense of community.
Whether desiring fresh produce or looking to volunteer your time, the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative is a great place to find what you are looking for. The volunteers and neighborhood are working together; creating a community that helps one another. With MUFI continuing to expand to adjacent buildings, their potential services to the community will grow along with it.
