Today is National Grilled Cheese Day and being that we are in the midwest, it’s kind of in our nature to love a good grilled cheese sandwich. With the weather finally in an upswing (not to jinx it), say goodbye to winter with a melt-in-your-mouth grilled cheese and a side of soup on National Grilled Cheese Day. Here are five places in metro Detroit that put a delicious spin on this delicious classic.
If you’re looking for a place to grab a great Michigan beer brewed in-house while you chow down on a delicious grilled cheese sandwich, look no further than Detroit Beer Company. You’ll find plenty of craft beer on tap and a grilled cheese sandwich made with fontina and white cheddar cheese, smoked bacon and sliced Granny Smith apples (yes, really) on French bread. Served with a cup of tomato bisque and you have yourself a recipe for good eatin’.
Located in Midtown, the gouda grilled cheese at The Block is a bit of a misnomer (in a good way). Made on a sourdough bread, this grilled cheese doesn’t just use gouda cheese, but cheddar and swiss, too! Three kinds of cheese paired with roma tomato, arugula lettuce and red pepper aioli. Mmmmm…
We would be remiss if we didn’t include GrillCheezerie Sandwich Shoppe on this list as it puts grilled cheese sandwiches front-and-center in both name and menu offerings. At the top of the menu, you’ll find several signature grilled cheese sandwiches, like “S’Mac & Cheese” and the tuna melt. You’ll also find the option to build your own grilled cheese sandwich by picking the toppings yourself.
Spencer is an Ann Arbor eatery known for its artisanal cheeses so much so that it has its very own wine club to boot. The grilled cheese sandwich sports roasted mushrooms, a whole grain mustard and aged gruyere cheese, a cheese that is not commonly found in American eateries.
Known as a Berkley destination for Michigan craft beer, cocktails and more, one lesser known treat on the menu is the toasted cheese & soup combo. Using artisan cheese, bacon and asiago bread, the only thing that makes this sandwich more perfect is the tomato fennel soup.
