Coneys

Okay. Let’s get the obvious mention out of the way. If you’re looking to get a coney dog in metro Detroit, THE two places you need to try at least once in your life is Lafayette and American Coney Island in downtown Detroit. They’re long-standing establishments and are embedded in Detroit’s history forever.

Obvious mention aside, if you’re in the Milford area, check out Americus Coney & Grill. Delicious coneys and a friendly staff. What more could you ask for?

Over in Taylor, you can find a great deal on coneys at Sami’s Coney Island. 99-cent coneys Monday-Thursday from 11am-7pm. Can’t beat that!

Gourmet

If you’re looking to go the extra mile with your hot dog, metro Detroit has some great gourmet hot dogs. Detroit Dog Co. in Royal Oak (and its mobile food truck) have gourmet dogs galore. The “Slim Shady” comes topped with deep fried McClure’s pickles, cheddar, onions and “Shady Sauce.” For our Polish food-loving friends, try the “Killer Kraut:” Polish sausage, Michigan-made sauerkraut, grilled onions and zesty mustard.

In Berkley, you can find Atomic Dawg and its many gourmet “Dawgs.” The “BBQ Hog Dawg” is topped with pulled pork, Canadian cole slaw and homemade BBQ sauce. If BBQ ain’t your jam, try the “Hula Dawg:” teriyaki sauce, grilled pineapple, grilled onions, lettuce and Japanese cherry mayo.

Vegan

You don’t have to be a meat eater to take part in National Hot Dog Month. If you’re new to the vegan diet, you might not know that vegan hot dogs are here and quite delicious. Ray’s Red Hots in Ann Arbor has a tofu “No Dog” hot dog. It’s made from certified organic, vegan tofu (also from Ann Arbor), basted in teriyaki, char-grilled and served on a whole wheat bun.

At Laika Dog in Detroit you can pick from one of the signature hot dogs or build your own, but what’s great is that either way you can substitute the beef hot dog for a vegan frankfurter. And, even better than that(!), if you just so happen to be craving a coney dog, the chili is vegan too!

How will you be celebrating National Hot Dog Month? A scrumptious vegan dog from Laika Dog? Or maybe the “Slim Shady” from Detroit Dog Co. caught your eye. Wherever you plan to chow down, we hope you enjoy National Hot Dog Month.
