Metro Detroit's Newest Restaurants: Winter 2015


It’s almost a new year, and that means it’s time for a slew of new restaurant openings. You’ve probably got a few holiday vacation days on the horizon, so use them to your advantage: get a taste of a few of Metro Detroit’s newest restaurants.

GreenSpace Café

Bursting with artisanal plant-based foods and craft cocktails, cardiologist Dr. Joel Kahn’s Ferndale eatery opened at the beginning of the month. The restaurant combines non-GMO and nearly exclusively organic sourcing of food and gourmet presentation with a full liquor license that incorporates raw juices, herbs and spices.

“The bruschetta is being proclaimed by devoted fans of Italian fare as world class and features beet hummus,” Dr. Kahn said. “The cheese board of nut-based cheeses is introducing many to dairy-free food options that do not sacrifice flavor or texture.”

The menu is ever changing, but you may find dishes like Root Vegetable Salad, Grilled Avocado and Cremini Tempeh Burger on the menu upon your visit. The restaurant’s gluten free, nut free and oil free options offer delicious choices without forgoing taste.

“Hippocrates said, ‘Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.’ We agree, and toast that with organic and biodynamic spirits to raise our joy and appreciation of great foods to an even higher level,” Dr. Kahn said.

Forest

Having recently reopened under the watchful eye of owner Samy Eid (of Phoenicia), few aspects remain of the original Forest Grill. While rebranding and restyling took place, the city of Birmingham wouldn’t allow for a name change, so certain aspects of the restaurant had to be preserved.

“We had to kind of work within those parameters,” Eid said.

A solid restaurant to start, Forest Grill claimed Freep’s Restaurant of the Year award in 2010. This time around, Eid hopes to intrigue diners through a variety of tasty offerings on the menu, which retains just two dishes from the old menu: farm egg and cauliflower ravioli.

“The best way to describe (the cuisine) is new Italian-American fusion,” Eid said. “Some amazing homemade pasta dishes, a great Bolognese… we do a squid ink pasta with a chestnut and lobster sauce that is amazing.”

Additional dishes prepared by executive chef Nick Janutol include braised lamb shank, risotto, salmon and duck breast. Small plates, entrees and salads allow for a unique dining experience.
