Over the hills and through the woods, it’s mountain biking we go!

Your speed builds as you race down a near vertical decline, your heart’s beating fast, dirt’s flying and you squeeze your hand grips as you prepare to squeeze through the trees up ahead. It’s all part of the thrill of mountain biking. Tight turns at the bottom of a steep hill, log jumps in your path and tight quarters through the trees make mountain biking an adrenaline filled, all-around exciting experience.
The best part? You are having so much fun you don’t even realize what a fantastic workout you are getting. Who said exercise can’t be fun?
Don’t get me wrong, regular biking is great but for all you adrenaline-junkies out there, the experience of riding the challenging terrain of a mountain bike trail – or an actual mountain – takes biking to a whole new level. You’re never going to get bored when your mountain biking. From very technical courses – complete with log piles and whoop-de-dos (a series of small, consecutive hills) – to courses geared towards beginners, there is literally a new challenge around every corner.
There are several vital pieces of equipment that will help make sure you are still able to walk upright after a tough trail. Gloves are great to help prevent blisters (believe it or not, your hands can take quite a beating) and padded bike shorts really help protect your derriere. Installing a padded bike seat will help to ensure you are still able to sit down the following day. If you’re going to be biking alone make sure you take a cell phone with you because the last thing you want is to be stranded in the middle of an umpteen-mile loop with a broken bike and no way to call for help.
Whether you have never gone mountain biking or you are a pro who has been at it for years, no one should miss out on the trails metro Detroit has to offer. There are hundreds of miles of trails just begging for you to cut loose and spin your wheels this summer.
Here are a few of our favorite trails to get you started…
Highland Recreation Lakes – Twisty, tree-filled and tough.
Island Lake Loops – Perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a mellow ride.
Lakeshore Park Mountain Bike Trail – Super technical and incredibly fun.
