Gravy, Cheese & Bacon Topped: Poutine in the D

French fry fanatics are probably familiar with the Canadian delicacy that is poutine: a pile of fries topped with cheese curds and brown gravy, or some variation thereof.

An appetizer to share amongst friends or a meal in and of itself, nothing says “comfort food on a cold December day” quite like poutine. Here’s where you’ll find some of the best Detroit has to offer:

HopCat

Whether you dine at the Ann Arbor or Detroit location, be sure to order Vladimir Poutine, a plate of beer battered crack fries topped with potato and cheese pierogi, Cheddar cheese curds, stout caramelized onions and cherry smoked bacon. Oh, yes, it’s also smothered in sour cream gravy. Counteract with a salad tomorrow.

Vinsetta Garage

This Berkley restaurant, housed in a former garage, offers Disco Fries for an appetizer, with Ellsworth cheese curds, chili flakes, scallions and whole grain mustard gravy on top. If you’re less traditional, opt for the Tikka Fries, which are piled with chicken tikka masala, homemade paneer and chopped scallions.

Toasted Oak

Brunch is great at this Novi eatery, especially when you order the Toasted Poutine. A plate of fries is topped with crispy pork belly confit, caramelized onions, mushrooms, Cheddar cheese curds, gravy and poached egg. If this doesn’t get you out of bed at a reasonable time on a Saturday, I’m not sure what will.

Ale Mary’s Craft Beer Hall

Sharable plates at this Royal Oak eatery include poutine topped with cheese curds, gravy and optional duck confit. We won’t tell if you want it all for yourself, though. If you’re a poutine fanatic, try the Duck Confit Poutine Burger, topped with the same fixin’s, plus a healthy handful of spring mix.

Brooklyn Street Local

Located in Corktown, you’ll find the motherload of poutine here. Start your day with Breakfast poutine, topped with beef or mushroom gravy, organic cheese curds, sunny side up egg and bacon or tempeh. There’s also a vegan option here, topped with mushroom gravy and Daiya, a dairy-free cheese alternative.

Grab a fork and get ready to dig! The gym will still be there tomorrow.
