It’s 2 o’clock in the afternoon. You just had lunch. Wherever you are, you’re starting to get a little…sleepy…
“HUH! WHAT? I’m just resting my eyes!” you scream.
Don’t kid yourself. This has happened to you more times than you care to admit. For some reason, what I affectionately call the “afternoon sleepies” find us like clockwork. Could it be what we’re eating for lunch? Why yes, yes it can.
While I’m embarrassed to admit it, my lunch usually isn’t piled high with enough lean proteins and other high-energy foods. So, I did what I always do when I want to change a habit of mine: research. Below you’ll find the fruits of my labor in the form of salads you can enjoy in the D that won’t have you “resting your eyes” every afternoon.
This shop in Novi is known for the “Half it Your Way” combo special, but it’s a couple of their specialty salads we have our waking eyes on. First up: the Cran-Man Salad. Aside from having one of the best names for a salad, it is made up of mixed greens, chicken, mandarin oranges, dried cranberries, parmesan cheese & walnuts served with fat-free raspberry vinaigrette. Can you say delicious AND healthy? The Cran-Man can. If you’re looking for something with a little more protein, the Maurice Salad is the way to go with, among other deliciousness, turkey, ham and egg.
Okay. This one is easy peasy. It’s called GreenSpace Superfood for crying out loud. Organic baby greens, quinoa, goji berries, vital nut and seed mix, avocado, beet, cucumber, edamame and micro greens (note: they may be “micro,” but we have it on good authority that those greens will vitalize your afternoon). For a couple extra bucks, you can also add tofu, grilled tempeh or avocado.
Over in Plymouth, you’ll find the Ironwood Grill. Like most sports bars, it may not be the first place you’d think to go for a healthy, energizing lunch, but you must not have tried their Shrimp, Avocado and Cucumber Salad. Contradictingly packed with baby spinach and jumbo shrimp, this invigorating salad also has diced avocado, cucumbers, tomatoes and green onions.
Two salads come to mind when looking for a pick me up from Detroit-based 7 Greens: Yoga Girl & Unami Bomb. First, Yoga Girl packs baby spinach, kale, quinoa, carrots, roasted beets, roasted brussels sprouts, roasted tofu and sriracha drizzle. The spinach kale and quinoa alone will add a kick to your afternoon. With the Unami Bomb, you’re getting spinach, kale, kimchi, quinoa, carrots, mushrooms, edamame, bean sprouts and a fried egg. Like the Yoga Girl, the Unami Bomb is covered in high-energy greens, but it’s that plus the fried egg that will give you all the energy you’ll need for the afternoon.
