Detroit Free Press and you Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers have teamed up for the Top 10 Takeover, a series of restaurant takeovers that will highlight the ten best new restaurants in Detroit and the surrounding area. The first stop on the Takeover was Republic on May 17. Next week, on May 31, the Takeover heads to Central Kitchen + Bar.
Read on to see what Central Kitchen + Bar is all about!
Located on Woodward Ave., facing Cadillac Square, a historical mainstay in Detroit’s economic history, Central Kitchen + Bar draws its inspiration from its location. This is especially apparent when the fact that Cadillac Square was the site of the Detroit Central Farmer’s Market in the 19th century (hence the name) is taken into account. The Detroit Central Farmer’s Market “was the economic and social heart of daily life in Detroit,” according to the Henry Ford Museum. Central Kitchen + Bar hopes to recapture that spirit.
A cursory glance at Central Kitchen + Bar’s menu will tell you that the cuisine is a combination of traditional American delights (hamburgers + sandwiches) with quite a few other treats that separate this eatery from some of the more common greasy spoons of America. Leading the charge in Central’s “Burgers + Sandwiches” section are the aptly named Central Burger (fried pickles, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, bacon, bistro sauce, brioche) and Detroit Burger (roasted wild mushrooms, zip, gruyere, lettuce, bistro sauce, brioche).
If burgers and sandwiches aren’t your thing, Central also sports a nice selection of tacos, salads and (if you’re there for dinner) a selection of “Plates,” such as Shrimp + Grits (white cheddar grits, Cajun shrimp, sweet peppers, Hungarian peppers, scallions) and Steak Frits (creekstone prime filet, seasoned fries, braised shallots, red wine jus).
Now that your appetite has been whet, take a look at the five-course meal you will be enjoying with a ticket to Central Takeover:
- First course: Heirloom tomato salad — English peas, marinated feta, garlic cracker
- Second course: Red wine grilled quail — oyster mushrooms, baby kale
- Third course: Grilled octopus — fennel, orange, castlevetrano olives, citrus
- Fourth course: Steak + Frites — braised shallot red wine
- Fifth course: Lemon pound cake — blueberry compote, cassis gastrique
Tickets to Central Takeover are $58 a piece and a portion of your ticket price will go towards Forgotten Harvest, a 501(c)(3) non-profit that works to feed the hungry in Detroit and prevent food waste by collecting surplus and perishable food from grocery stores, fruit and vegetable markets, restaurants and more.
