“About 10 years ago we were driving at the Downriver Cruise with signs on the sides of our car “Wanted – 1956 Chevy Nomad” when a guy flagged us down to tell us a friend of his might have one for sale. We gave him our name & phone number & asked him to have the guy call us. A couple of weeks went by and no call. So we thought he didn’t want to sell it. Then after the third week we got a call, it just so happens that he had been on vacation and called us the first chance he got. We set up a day to go and see it in Waterford, MI with our good friend who was a manager of a dealership body shop. After a couple of phone calls to agree on the price, the Nomad was ours. The previous owner had started to restore it twenty five years before that time and lost interest. It was in pieces when we bought it. There were two’s and three’s of just about every part of the car. My wife hand polished, identified and wrapped all of the stainless and chrome trim.
The good friend that went with us did the body work, paint and put it back together in about 45 weeks. It has a 350 small block, (about 450 horse), 400 turbo trans, rack & pinion power steering, power disc brakes, all polished aluminum and chrome under the hood and Billet aluminum wheels. The interior has NOS (original) material, and an Ididit polished aluminum steering column. We’ve taken numerous first place trophies at car shows including Autorama in 2003. And the rest is history.
We drive it all the time, unless it’s raining! We thoroughly enjoy our Nomad, including our 2-1/2 year old grandson. It can’t leave the driveway unless he’s in it!”
