Char-Grilled: Metro Detroit's Best Burgers (Part Two)

We’ve talked burgers before, as well as sliders. However, when you live in Metro Detroit, where there are an abundance (get it, aBUNdance?) of delicious burgers to consume, one list will just not suffice. Thus, I present to you Metro Detroit’s best burgers… part two:
Mercury Burger Bar, 2163 Michigan Ave., Detroit, probably isn’t the best choice for the calorie-conscious among us, because here, the burgers are fried in lard. However, there are a baker’s dozen worth of creations on the menu, including the S.W. Detroit, a burger topped with a chorizo slider, Munster cheese, tortilla strips, jalapenos, avocado and pickled spiced carrots. In addition to several other beef options are the California Turkey Burger, Portobello Burger and Salmon Burger.
Blimpy Burger, 551 S. Division St., Ann Arbor, is known for its… unusual ordering system. If you’re a first timer, ye be warned, take a look at the rules online before you get in line. If you don’t play by their rules, you’ll be kicked to the end of the line. However, once you get it right, you’ll understand what all the fuss is about.
Woodbridge Pub, 5169 Trumbull St., Detroit, has a variety of burgers, including an Angus Beef Burger, Mahi Mahi Burger, BBQ Burger (with bacon, white cheddar and onion crisps) and Hipster Burger (beef patty with portabella mushroom cap, goat cheese and herb mayonnaise). You’ve probably never heard of it, though.
Sweet Lorraine’s, 29101 Greenfield Rd., Southfield, serves several unique burgers, including a Thai Turkey Burger (with Sriracha aioli, pickled cucumbers and spicy slaw), California Club Burger (beef burger with mozzarella, guacamole, bacon and honey mustard), and the SLC (a half-pound beef patty with crispy onions). The restaurant’s secondary location, 17100 N. Laurel Park Dr., Livonia, serves a few different choices, including the Jazzy Burger (topped with ham, chèvre cheese and Southern Comfort BBQ sauce), and Cajun Burger (with sautéed peppers and onions, cheddar cheese and chipotle aioli).
Nemo’s, 1384 Michigan Ave., Detroit, is pegged as a “Detroit classic” and the sports bar provides a great atmosphere to chow down before, after or during a Tigers game. The ground round burgers featured on the menu are simple but delicious, and include a variety of cheese burgers, as well as a Bacon Cheese Burger, Deluxe Cheese Burger and Cheddar Burger with grilled onions.
Basement Burger Bar, 33316 Grand River Ave., Farmington, has a build-your-own burger bar with a variety of patties to choose from, including Angus beef, Kobe beef, bison, chicken, turkey, portabella cap and black bean. There are also several menu staples, including a Tropical Burger (with smoked BBQ ketchup, apple smoked bacon, grilled pineapple and Swiss cheese), Italian Stallion (with marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese sticks), and Stuffed Bleu Burger (with crumbled bleu cheese, bacon, red pepper mayo and spring mix).
The Inn Season Café, 500 E. 4th St., Royal Oak, has a menu chock full of homemade veggie burgers, so you vegetarians can still get your burger fix, sans meat. Your choices include the Fourth Street Burger (with a multi-grain patty), Tempeh Burger (with a soy patty), The Big Baprawski (with a soy patty), and Portabella Burger (with a baked mushroom cap patty).
Whether you’re looking for a classic burger, a veggie burger, or a slightly obscure bison burger, all of the above restaurants and bars have plenty of options. Have one with extra cheese for me, please!
