We all need to let loose and laugh from time to time, and one of my personal favorite ways to do so is to go see a stand-up comic at a comedy club. Drinking a brew or two, laughing at jokes and spending time with friends or family is an ideal night for me. If this sounds enticing to you as well, you’ll want to follow along as we discuss some of southeast Michigan’s top comedy spots.
Mark Ridley’s is the place to be for comedy in Royal Oak. Up-and-comers, seasoned veterans and nationally-recognized headliners all get to perform here. Among the upcoming acts are well-known actor and comedian Tom Arnold, and the hilarious comedienne Illiza Shlesinger! Open Mic Nights take place on Wednesdays.
The Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase has been providing comic relief to A2 residents since 1984. Comedy Jamm gives 12 often up-and-coming comedians the chance to shine weekly on Wednesday night, and has a full calendar of stand-up events every Thursday through Saturday. Accomplished comedian Dewayne Kennedy brings his stand-up act to the venue this week, starting Thursday, Feb.18.
Laff Tracks, located inside of Breaktime Billiards in Novi, is another great option. The venue has events featuring open mic, improv, stand-up, roasts and even “Comedy for a Cause,” which raises money for a charity. Check out the calendar for upcoming shows.
While Go Comedy! is more of an improv venue as opposed to stand-up, it is still the home to good old-fashioned, hilarious fun. With shows, events, games and other happenings almost every night, there is something for everyone here. In addition, Go U provides classes for all skill levels of improv. There are also guest workshops and the theater is available for rental!
Let the chuckling begin! Be sure to check out any of these aforementioned places the next time you want to laugh until you cry. I’ve heard laughing keeps you young, by the way.
