Dinner and a Movie: Drive Up to a Drive-In in the D

As residents of The Motor City, we love our cars. Plain and simple. But, there are some automotive experiences that seem to be almost lost to time. Drive-in movie theaters and restaurants are almost non-existent, which makes us ever thankful for the ones that have stuck around. So, pull up in your ride, enjoy a coney or two and kick back to a double feature in Metro Detroit.

Movies

Ford-Wyoming Drive-In

Named after its cross streets, the Ford-Wyoming Drive-In is one of the last remaining drive-in movie theaters in Michigan. This drive-in always plays a double feature and is open all week long. Right now, they are playing The Meg, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, Disney’s Christopher Robin, Mission Impossible: Fallout and more.

Summer Drive-In (USA Hockey Arena)

Like the Ford Drive-In, you can catch a pair of movies on one of three screens at Summer Drive-In in Plymouth. Right now, they are playing The Meg, Mission Impossible: Fallout, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, Hotel Transylvania 3, Incredibles 2 and more.

Restaurants

Bill’s Drive-In

Located in Ypsilanti and open since 1939, Bill’s Drive-In is a no-frills place where ordering is as simple as parking your car, telling the carhop what you’d like and waiting a few minutes to dine on some delicious coneys, fries and more. Get it now because Bill’s closes for the winter season from October until February.

Daly Drive-In

Located in Livonia, this is the last Daly Drive-In still standing. It is owned by Scott Grace, whose father opened it in 1959, and serves your regular drive-in fare of coney dogs, fries, root beer and more. The chili for Daly’s coney dog is made with a ketchup-based sauce that is unique enough that you can find bottles of it at local Hiller’s and Busch’s supermarkets.

Eddie’s Drive-In

If you want the nostalgic drive-in experience with carhops on roller skates, then head to Eddie’s Drive-In in Harrison Charter Township. Enjoy a footlong hot dog and root beer while you relax in the comfort of your car and your favorite radio station carries you away.

Chick Inn Drive-In

While Chick Inn Drive-In has the classic menu items like coney dogs, fries and burgers, this Ypsilanti establishment is where you can get the nostalgic experience of a 1950s drive-in with a delicious chicken sandwich.
