From Poke to Pulled Pork: Specialty Nachos in Metro Detroit

While there is nothing wrong with the traditional dish, why not challenge your perception of nachos? What does a dish have to have in order to be considered “nachos”? From poke to pulled pork, Metro Detroit restaurants are asking you to open your mind and open your mouths. Here are five nachos worth your appetite.
Sushi fans might like this. Poke nachos (nachos with raw, diced seafood on top) are starting to pop up in more places every year. Jim Brady’s serves ahi tuna poke nachos at both of its locations (Ann Arbor and Royal Oak). Enjoy crispy flour tortillas, soy-ginger marinated ahi tuna, avocado, wasabi peas, pico, jalapenos and Yum Yum sauce.
When it comes to nachos, it’s often that vegetarians get left out a bit. For you, there’s Punch Bowl Social’s “It’s Nacho Mama’s” nachos, which replaces the traditional beef or chicken protein with roasting cauliflower. You still get the delicious toppings, like queso fundido, fresh jalapeno, pickled red onion, jalapeno crema and cilantro.
For those of us that prefer potato over corn, Mercury Burger Bar in Detroit offers “Tater Tachos.” It’s exactly what it sounds like: tater tots covered in cheese sauce, crumbled bacon, jalapenos, salsa and cilantro sour cream. Enjoy it with a milkshake, Boston Cooler or Faygo Orange Creamsicle.
Ascension Brewery in Novi not only serves delicious craft beer but has a menu of delectable bites to boot. That includes “Mr. Piggins Brewery Nachos,” which is topped with slow-cooked pulled pork, cheddar ale, red onion, Ascension’s custom cheese blend, pico de gallo, green onion, and Sriracha Bourbon BBQ drizzle. Pair it with one of Ascension’s many craft beers on tap and enjoy.
While the nachos you’ll unbury in Tio’s Mexican Cafe’s Mt. Nacheesmo Challenge are more traditional in terms of toppings, this challenge is one to reckon with. Meant to serve 4-5 adults, this five-pound platter is filled with beans, beef, chicken, pork, Monterey jack and cheddar cheese, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, black olives, sour cream, guacamole and creamy queso. Those seeking to take on the challenge must eat the entire plate by themselves in 45 minutes or less. Winners will receive the nachos for free, a t-shirt and their name on the Mt. Nacheesmo wall. Losers must pay the normal cost of the nachos ($50).
