Get Crafty at the DIY Street Fair in Ferndale

If you thought you wouldn’t get the chance to attend another art fair until next summer rolls around, you would be wrong.

The DIY Street Fair will be held this weekend, Friday, September 13 through Sunday, September 15 in downtown Ferndale. The two-day, three-night fest is presented by your Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers and will feature the best local artisans, musicians, restaurants and breweries.

This year marks the DIY Street Fair’s sixth annual event, and it looks like it’s going to be the best one yet! The marketplace lineup features notable artists like The End Grain Woodworking Co., Fist of Detroit Apparel, Paintings by Jason Gibner, art by Metro Devious and The Rust Belt Market.

One of this year’s special events is 18×24, a gig poster pop-up shop featuring prints by some of the best poster artists in the U.S. Each artist, including Adam Hanson, Shawn Knight and Warpaint Studio, will have his or her own booth set up to show off and sell their works. In addition to gig posters, prints and clothing will be for sale at select booths.

An art festival would be nothing without some snacks and refreshments along the way, right? While it may be September, you’ll still be out in the sun and you have to keep your strength!

The DIY Street Fair aims to promote all things local while embracing the wonderful aspects of Detroit, and that extends beyond the art. All of the participating restaurants and food trucks are local, so now is the time to ditch chain restaurants for a weekend and try some seriously good grub. Especially when the following restaurants will be at your fingertips all weekend long: Corridor Sausage Co., The Emory, Detroit BBQ Company, Om Café, Mac Shack, Garden Fresh Gourmet Salsa, El Guapo, Green Zebra, Howe’s Bayou, Treat Dreams, Motor City Franks and Woodward Avenue Brewers.

You’re obviously going to need a beverage to pair with all of that food. Luckily, craft beer and cocktails will be served at two beverage tents throughout the festival. Keep an eye out for the Pabst Blue Ribbon tent, as well as the Detroit Manufacturing beverage tent.

Should any fitness buffs be reading this (or if you’re just interested in burning off all the calories from that delicious food), you might want to take part in the DIY 5K: Art on the Run, taking place on Saturday, September 14 at 9 a.m.

Not only is the 5K good for you and your health, in addition to getting your heart pumping, the race will benefit Ferndale public school’s art programs. While that’s the best part of the race, here’s the second best: while you’re running, there are pit stops along the way with canvasses where you can doodle your own work of art! Besides the food and drink, this is the only other part of the festival that has a price tag: running the 5K will cost you $30.

With as much musical talent as Metro Detroit has, it would be a shame to hold a festival that didn’t include live tunes. Some of the area’s most talented musicians will perform all weekend long, including Flint Eastwood, Child Bite, The HandGrenades and The Sights. You can find the full schedule here.

An art fair is obviously screaming for some hands on activities for kids. The DIY Street Fair’s special Kids Zone will feature various activities throughout the weekend, including a ferris wheel, climbing tour, dunk tank, make and take crafts, face painting and more.

While you’re at the fair this weekend, tweet or Instagram any photos you take with #DIYstreetfair and share your own art!
