Last week saw the unveiling of the Spirit of Detroit plaza in front of the — you guessed it — Spirit of Detroit statue on Woodward Ave. between Jefferson Ave. and Larned St. The 20,000-square-foot plaza will be home to pedestrians looking for a quick spot to eat at one of the food trucks parked on-site or just looking for a place to hangout with friends and family while catching a light breeze from the Detroit River. The Spirit of Detroit plaza is just one of the newest attractions in downtown Detroit that are giving Detroiters even more reason to be proud of the city they call home. Earlier this year, the city saw the opening of the QLINE, a streetcar that runs along Woodward Ave. from Grand Blvd. to Congress St. It opened with a free fare weekend that has been extended until June 30, after which regular fares will be instated. The QLINE route is great if you want to make a trip to the Riverfront to check out the new plaza, Campus Martius or any one of the many attractions on Woodward Ave. If the QLINE isn’t your speed, there is now a bike-sharing program in the city called MoGo. With 430 bikes available, Detroiters can walk up to one of the MoGo stations located across ten neighborhoods, purchase a bike for up to 30-minute trips and then return the bike to whichever station is closest to their destination. The city isn’t just developing new spots to hang out on Woodward Ave. by the Riverfront. July 20 will see the opening of Beacon Park on the west side of the city by the Grand Army of the Republic Building. Beacon Park will cover 1.5 acres and be home to a restaurant, food trucks, sidewalks, a central lawn and areas for public performances and outdoor activities. Plenty of fun activities are being planned for the Grand Opening, such as live music from Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Thornetta Davis and Lord Huron. So, Detroiters, how do you plan on spending your summer in the city? Will you go for a nice bike ride along the Riverfront or will you get some grub from one of the food trucks parked at the Spirit of Detroit plaza? Why not both? Whatever you like to do, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in downtown Detroit this summer.
