When the weather starts to get colder, that is when scrapbookers of all ages and experience levels start to pull out their latest projects so they can get together and make something special with their photos and memories.

Whether it is a summer vacation, a fun family outing or just because her daughters have done something new, veteran scrapbook fan Patty Greenen said she finds scrapbooking a way to hang out with friends and express herself in a way that is creative and fun. Greenen, who lives in Grosse Pointe Woods, even turned her dining room into a scrapbook paradise with supplies and all of her projects organized into one space.

“Winter is a great time for scrapbooking because you don’t feel guilty as much about being inside during the cold months, where as in the summertime, you want to be outside enjoying the weather and outdoor activities,” Greenen said.

Greenen said there are many local scrapbooking stores where she can find every kind of product she needs to make her photographs pop and tell the story about a special event.

“If I do go to a specialty scrapbook store I either go to Remember When Scrapbooking in Macomb, Scrapbook Tree in Shelby Township and I’ve ventured to Scrappy Chic in Livonia a few times. I try to give my business to small businesses, but I do venture to Michael’s and Joann too,” Greenen said.

Best of all, it provides a calming backdrop for getting together with her friends, whether it for a one-day event or a weekend of scrapbooking and girl talk.

“It gathers me together with my close girlfriends to have a fun filled day of laughter, creativity and sharing memories,” Greenen said. “My friends and I have been scrapbooking together for 18 years and we go on a yearly four-day weekend away to Memories Manor in St. Clair. It is an amazing getaway for us and we have gone there at different times of the year.”

Plus, there’s always a reason to scrapbook if they want to get together.

“Every Super Bowl Sunday we make it a BIG scrapbooking event and call it Super ScrapBowl Sunday. We even all bring an appetizer to munch on and have dinner too,” Greenen said.

Here are some Metro Detroit stores that specialize in scrapbooking supplies if you want to try a new, creative hobby this wintertime.

Scrappy Chic

If you’re looking to really dive deeply into scrapbooking, this Livonia store is a great place to explore. The 6500-square-foot shop is brimming with a wide range of paper products and supplies for scrapbookers, card-maker, and mixed media enthusiasts, from beginners to pros. The store offers regular classes for all levels, switching them from inside the shop to Facebook Live to help its customers with social distancing.

Scrapbook Tree

For some, learning how to scrapbook may feel intimidating, but the welcoming spirit at the Scrapbook Tree in Shelby Township helps draw people into this activity. They offer video demonstrations, lots of in-store activities such as its Sketch Club as well as help with layouts and other must-have techniques to get started with this hobby.

The Paper Hallow

For more than 10 years, people relied on the Paper Hallow in Sterling Heights for all of their scrapbooking needs. Now, the company has closed its storefront and is focusing on offering online supplies, card-making gear and help with any project. Store officials also still organize conventions for scrappers to come together and work in groups when it is safe and healthy to do so.

Paper Source

Whether you want to make your own wedding invitations, create a one-of-a-kind scrapbook page or get the perfect gift wrap, the Paper Source in Birmingham has something for every shopper. They also have lots of interesting workshops so people can learn to do it themselves with the help of their specialty instructors.

Remember When Scrapbooking

This Macomb Township store has everything for your crop. They have a wide array of page kits, cards and custom die-cuttings for every theme you can imagine. They also offer supplies, cards and classes for individuals and groups as requested. If you need a tote for all of your gear or new paper to try a special page, Remember When will have it.
