Local Fresh Food to Start the School Year Off Right

When it comes to a new school year, things can get hectic very quickly. New classes, new materials, new projects, new teachers, new schools…it can all get to be a bit much for kids and parents alike. With so much changing all at once, it can be hard to remember to eat well, too. Thankfully, there are plenty of good choices for shopping when it comes to fresh produce, ready-made meals, and more in Metro Detroit.

Western Market

“Ferndale’s favorite market” opened its doors in 1983 and has continued to serve the Ferndale and North Detroit area of southeast Michigan since. More commonly known as Western Market, it is a one-stop-shop for fresh produce, organic food, ready-made meals, soups made daily, and more. Pick up a fresh fruit or veggie tray as a perfect after-school snack!

Royal Oak Farmers Market

Located on Eleven Mile Road in downtown Royal Oak, the Royal Oak Farmers Market has two main market days. The Friday market runs from May until Thanksgiving while the Saturday market runs all year round. The Market sports an incredible selection of produce from local vendors & farmers. You can even find local bee farmers selling fresh honey, perfect for cold remedies as the kids go back to school. They will also occasionally host food truck rallies on non-market days, which is nice if you want to get out of the house for dinner and not spend a lot of money. Stay tuned to the Royal Oak government website or Royal Oak Farmers Market Facebook page for details and new events.
