The Michigan Institute of Urology Men’s Health Foundation will host the sixth annual Men’s Health Event at Ford Field this Saturday, September 24. The event is meant to teach men ways to stay healthy, offer free health screenings, and supply information about advances in healthcare.
The family friendly event will provide attendees with free flu shots, free haircuts, health and sports displays, fitness activities, yoga, and more. Former Detroit Lions kicker Eddie Murray will make a guest appearance to sign autographs from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. There will also be football drills taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
There are plenty of other activities happening at the event, but the main goal for the MIU Men’s Health Foundation is to provide screenings and health information for men who might not be fully aware of their health condition. Dr. Michael Lutz, a partner at the Michigan Institute of Urology and founder of the MIU Men’s Health Foundation, said that the screenings value over $1,800 and will include vital screening types.
“This is not only going to save their lives but the lives of their family. If they do not go and they do not get checked, the survivorship of their family is destined to be unsuccessful because an unhealthy male in the family will mean that their kids will not have a very good likelihood to make it past high school,” Dr. Lutz said.
For the first time in this event’s six year history, there will also be genetic testing available, which Dr. Lutz thinks is crucial for the health of a family.
“We know that a number of cancers are familial and we will be offering the opportunity for free screenings to help determine if they are at risk for familial cancers,” Dr. Lutz said.
Since its inception in 2009, the MIU Men’s Health Foundation has been dedicated to men’s health advocacy and community outreach. The non-profit organization also helps with prostate cancer services throughout Southeastern Michigan. They hold a monthly prostate cancer survivorship series, which is for prostate cancer survivors to learn how to become healthier for themselves and their families.
The foundation has also established the Blue Fund, which is specifically designed for men who are being treated for prostate cancer who meet the financial criteria and need assistance with financial expenses. The fund was developed last year and helps prostate cancer patients cover their expenses for up to$1,000 a month for 3 months.
