Unless you’re familiar with the local music scene, the name “Child Bite” might throw you off a little at first. Rest assured, the name has nothing to do with a mischievous toddler, but the moniker of one of Detroit’s best hardcore experimental bands.
While several of the band’s original members have graduated from the project, Child Bite is thriving on all levels and is currently composed of Shawn Knight (vocals, guitar, synth), Sean Clancy (bass), Brandon Sczomak (guitar) and Ben Moore (drums).
Knight assembled Child Bite in 2005, and since then, he and his band mates have released three full-length albums, Wild Feast LP (2006), Fantastic Gusts of Blood LP (2008), and The Living Breathing Organ Summer LP (2010), in addition to countless EPs and singles.
Later this year, the band will be combining its two most recent EPs into a nearly-full-length album chock full of “loud, weird, rock music.”
“We are getting heavier nowadays, with more metal influences but we definitely aren’t a straight up metal band,” Knight said. “Somewhere between punk, alternative and metal music of the 80s and 90s.”
Child Bite’s songs feature catchy melodies, but they’re far from cookie-cutter. One of the band’s most popular songs, “Odd Inn,” is featured in the new 2013 Chevy Cruze commercial, but isn’t as hardcore rock as most others.
“In the end, we usually have a song that has definite parts that will be memorable, but also a whirlwind of strange atonal harmonies, off-kilter structures and bizarre lyrics,” Knight said.
The songs aren’t the only memorable aspect of Child Bite, as the band has found themselves in some pretty odd scenarios over the years. Whether it’s crashing at a fan’s house or the various types of shows they play, there’s never a dull moment.
“We play big clubs to a few hundred people, then we play a café where the walls are crumbling due to our excessive volume,” Knight said, noting that they don’t adjust for the more intimate shows.
Child Bite just wrapped up its “Vision Crimes Tour,” and Knight was more than pleased with the experience. As for the rest of 2013, the band will be embarking on its first ever European tour in the spring, then heading to the studio to work on their fourth full-length album.
