School’s Back in Session: Be Prepared with These Events in Metro Detroit


Students and teachers might not want to believe this but school is back in just a few short weeks. Just as Metro Detroit has helped make your summer eventful, many communities are making sure the last few weeks are just as entertaining along with preparing you for the upcoming school year. So whether you’re looking to get some much needed school supplies or looking for free family fun, here are some back to school events taking place in Metro Detroit. 

Back to School Pep Rally for Health & Wellness (8/22)

Looking to send kids into the new school year feeling motivated and energized, the Back to School Pep Rally will take place at the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency Center in Detroit on Thursday, August 22. The Coalition for Healthy Youth and Families (CHYF) event will include helpful messaging on underage drinking, opioids, mental health and wellness tips. Free food, music, haircuts, backpack giveaways, and school supplies will also be available. Free Book Bag and Supplies Rally (8/24)

Champion Parents are looking to give Metro Detroit kids all the supplies they need for the upcoming school year at their Back to School Rally. Free food, giveaways, activities, and school supplies for all kids will be available throughout the afternoon. The free event kicks off at 1 p.m. at the First United Church in Detroit and will run until 5 p.m.

Back to School Bash (8/31)

Ypsilanti Community Schools is getting students ready for the upcoming year with a big party suitable for all ages on Saturday, August 24. The free event at Prospect Park will feature live music, BBQ, hair cuts, free school supplies, backpacks and other cool item giveaways. All families are welcome regardless of school district and Ypsilanti Community Schools administrators will be on-hand to answer any questions.

Back to School Skate Jam (9/28)

Taking place a few weeks into the new school year, U.N.I.T.Y.’s Third Annual Back to School Skate Jam will take place at Northland Roller Park on Saturday, September 28. The skate party is $7 per ticket – or $25 for five tickets – with all proceeds going towards U.N.I.T.Y. programs and outreach services. Back to School Program

The Detroit Branch of the NAACP will be hosting its Back to School Program at the beginning of the school year to help kids stay in school. The program aims to provide kids with proper mentoring, tutoring, remedial assistance and incentives for maintaining regular attendance. Students can also receive school supplies to prepare them for a healthy school year. More information on the branch’s services can be found on their website.
