Going in for your annual mammogram like normal only to have your world flipped upside down by a cancer diagnosis can be life altering — so life-altering that now you’re wondering how you will support your family on a limited income? How will you even pay for day to day expenses? Luckily, non-profit organization Shades of Pink Foundation (SOPF) is making things less stressful by providing support and helping with the financial burden of what breast cancer patients face every day.
Since 2005, the Shades of Pink Foundation has been walking it out at the Detroit Zoo, but this year things will be getting wild. This annual walk event is an effort to raise money for women diagnosed with breast cancer who potentially face financial challenges with medical treatments and bills.
In Michigan, each year, approximately 8,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. With that, more than 2,400 of those women will lose their jobs, causing additional financial stress. In 2018, more than 2,500 women in Michigan experienced a financial burden due to costly medical treatments.
With this year’s goal to raise $250,000, participants are going to have ‘a wild time. It’s a new name but carries the same goal of supporting one another during a trying time. “A Wild Time at the Detroit Zoo” became the new name to be inclusive of all participants along with their families. The event is full of family-friendly activities for all ages.
It’s not too late to sign up. The walk is happening on April 27th at The Detroit Zoo. Interested participants can also register at Art Van Furniture on April 25th or the morning of the Zoo Walk at the registration tent at the front entrance of The Detroit Zoo. There will be an opening ceremony at 8:00 am prior to the walk. There will also be an auction with cool Detroit-related items and experiences.
