Show Off Your Detroit Pride at the 10th Annual Marche du Nain Rouge

Detroit pride is important, but did you know that it is essential in defeating the Nain Rouge, a harbinger of doom, every March?

Whether you knew it or not, the Marche du Nain Rouge is returning to Midtown Detroit for its 10th year of celebrating what makes Detroit unique. Motorcycles, cosplay, and the Nain Rouge will all be on display as Metro Detroiters gather to defeat the harbinger of doom by overwhelming him with city pride.

The free parade invites everyone to join them at the corner of Canfield and Second Avenue, next to Traffic Jam & Snug, at noon on Sunday, March 24. The parade to the Masonic Temple begins at 1 p.m. and all are encouraged to dress in cosplay, bring masks, or do whatever it takes to show city pride. Awards will also be presented to the groups with best costumes and human-powered floats.

Marche du Nain Rouge began in 2010, when the city of Detroit was facing its fair share of hardships. Co-founder and event director Francis Grunow said that the goal was to bring the community together and celebrate what makes the city of Detroit unique.

“We saw how important the first Mardi Gras after Hurricane Katrina was to the city of New Orleans, and when the city of Detroit was facing financial hardships, we wanted to bring something like that to Detroit,” Grunow said.

This year marks the 10th rendition of the Marche du Nain Rouge. It has grown exponentially since its first parade where it had roughly 300 attendees. Grunow thinks the march grows every year because it’s a unique event where you don’t just watch the parade, but you make the parade.

“[Marche du Nain Rouge] really is an inside-out parade. It allows you to participate in street theater and let your freak flag fly,” Grunow said.

For those who want to get a head start on the festivities, Traffic Jam & Snug will be hosting Krewes du Rouge on Thursday, March 21. The event will feature award-winning beer and bites, the Motor City Zydeco, and a floor show by Caribbean Mardi Gras Productions. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the cover is only $5.

While you’re getting your cosplay and motorcycles ready for March 24, be sure to keep an eye on the Marche du Nain Rouge’s website and Facebook page for the latest information and updates.
