Spring Cleaning: Clear Your Mind by Cleaning Your Car

What is it about springtime that creates a Pavlovian response in our brain to clean everything? Is it the warmer weather, additional hours of daylight or lack of hazardous weather conditions? Our surroundings influence our mental state and all of those things reflect that. Cold weather makes us defensive. A lack of sunlight causes depression. And braving the winter roads is no one’s definition of fun.

They say, “When you look good, you feel good,” and, since our environment influences our mental state, why not take that into account when you’re getting into your vehicle of choice? For example, if you’re getting into a Chevy Malibu, you might see its stylish interior as a reflection of some of your own style.

Whatever your daily driver may be, as Michiganders, going from the bitterness of winter to the refreshing nature of spring can do wonders for one’s mental health.

That’s where spring cleaning comes in — a concept that has been around, researchers say, for millennia. It is the opportunity and need to clean one’s home, but is it not also an opportunity and need to clean one’s mind? Given how much time metro Detroiters spend in these modern engineering marvels we call cars, they too could use a good spring cleaning. The 2018 Chevy Malibu may be stylish, but even the best-looking things need a little tender, loving care.

If you’ve never done a serious, deep clean of your car, you might be wondering where to start. To be truthful, whether you start with the interior or the exterior, it doesn’t really matter. Personally, I find it cathartic to end by washing the outside of the car. Maybe it has something to do with working my way from the inside out.

In any case, to do a thorough clean of the inside of your car, you’re going to want a couple things: a shop vacuum with attachments for getting into small crevices, fabric-appropriate cleaning supplies and a trash bag for all of the random things you’ll find from years gone by. Separate what you want to keep from what you want to toss. Physical organization does wonders for mental organization.

As for the outside of your car, you’ll need a bucket of soapy water, a set of clean towels and, if possible, a hand-activated water hose. You know what to do from here, but I implore you to take your time to clean every nook and cranny. The more work you put into something, the greater the sense of accomplishment you’ll receive in the end.

Once everything is squeaky clean, take a moment to step back and admire your hard work. It’s not just your car that will thank you; your mind will also feel the positive effects of a job well done.

With that said, I also understand that in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, finding the time to do all this cleaning can be a chore of its own. In that case, enjoy of all the benefits of a clean car without the hard work by paying a visit to these local shops.
