Brewed for the Season: Springtime Beers in Metro Detroit

What makes a good beer? Is it the artisanal craftsmanship of the brewer? The complementary ingredients and flavors? The right time of year? If you ask me, it’s all of the above.

Now that spring has officially arrived in Detroit, sunshine and all, it’s high time we take a look at beers on tap from some of Michigan’s finest breweries. From lavender infusion to watermelon gluttony (not the official names, I swear), these brews are a perfect accompaniment to the feeling that makes you want to swing the windows wide open and raise a glass to sunshine and happiness.

“Pollination Sensation” from Arbor Brewing Company

Dubbed a honey lavender ale, Pollination Sensation is brewed with fresh lavender and wildflower honey. The combination results in an ale that feels fresh and tastes of flowers and sugar. Springtime, here we come.

“Whango” from Atwater Brewery

Available now through the end of summer, this mango flavored wheat ale from Atwater Brewery has a not-too-sweet, not-too-bitter flavor profile that is perfect for a Michigan spring or summer. Find it at Atwater’s Detroit Tap House or in stores across the region.

“ControversiALE” from Short’s Brewing Company

Controversiale 2018

Returning favorite ControversiALE brings with it an aroma of citrus and pine paired with a grapefruit hop marmalade in an American IPA package. It’s hoppy, like a good IPA, but feels smooth enough to make you second-guess that label.

“Whitsun Ale” & “MI-Berry Vice” from Arcadia Ales

Just as Arcadia Ales itself is inspired by the island across the pond, Whitsun Ale is brewed in the style of a mid-19th-century English festival ale. This wheat beer is spiced with orange peel and coriander that complement the notes of Michigan honey. For a truly sweet wheat ale, look to Arcadia’s MI-Berry Vice with a strong red and black raspberry flavor. Both brews feel perfect for a warm night on the patio at your favorite taproom.

“Green Zebra” from Founders Brewing Co.

This gose style ale from Founders blends the taste of watermelon, a quintessential fruit for the warmest time of the year, with a hint of sea salt that brings to mind memories of hot days at the beach. Green Zebra was initially released as part of Founders’ “Artist Series” in 2017 but has become a spring and summertime mainstay.
