Metro Detroit is brimming with creative energy, and some of the best ways to tap into it involve rolling up your sleeves and making something with your own hands. Whether you have been crafting for years or have never picked up a paintbrush, the studios and makerspaces across Metro Detroit offer guided, beginner-friendly workshops where you walk out the door with a finished piece you can proudly display or gift. From screen printing and glassblowing to splatter painting and sustainable crafting, here are six standout spots to explore your creative side.

Art in Motion

19939 Livernois, Detroit

This welcoming studio along Detroit’s historic Avenue of Fashion is a go-to destination for guided experiences that make creativity feel approachable and exciting. Art in Motion hosts workshops ranging from wheel throwing and molding projects to tiles and pottery painting. Perfect for group outings, workshops typically last around two hours, and your finished piece will be completed after a 4-6 week turnaround period. Be sure to book in advance to ensure your spot and wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. For more serious learners, independent study classes are available in a non-structured format, which includes a few hours of instruction and open studio time. Keep an eye on their social media for seasonal-themed events and other offerings.

Blazer at Grandma's

Wherever the road takes you, go in style. The Chevy Blazer offers the perfect blend of sophistication and versatility for your next journey.

Splatter

1956 Hilton Road, Ferndale

If you have ever wanted to throw paint at a canvas with reckless abandon and call it art, Splatter in Ferndale is your place. Their signature splatter rooms are music-filled spaces where you fling, drip, and pour paint onto a canvas to create a completely original abstract piece. Get suited up and get to painting! With no experience needed and 26 colors of paint available, endless opportunities await. Another option is Pour + Spin sessions, where you pour a design over a canvas and spin it out on a spinning table. All ages are welcome to splatter, and you can choose to take home your creation after your session concludes, or come back after it’s finished drying completely. The whole atmosphere here is infectious and joyful, and you genuinely do not need an ounce of artistic skill to have an incredible time. Just book ahead online and wear something you don’t mind suiting up over.

Overtime Print Shop

5711 Shaefer Road, Dearborn

For anyone drawn to graphic design, streetwear culture, or the satisfaction of making something both artistic and wearable, Overtime Print Shop offers a creative experience you will not find at a typical paint night. This Dearborn shop specializes in screen printing, and their workshops leave you with a customized poster, shirt, and hoodie that you printed yourself. Designs are pre-made for the class, and you customize your work from there. Creative energy runs high, and while the screen is going, you’ll enjoy coloring in your own poster. Lasting two to three hours, this hands-on experience is open to all ages and results in something you can actually use regularly.

Scrap Creative Reuse

4567 Washtenaw Avenue, Ann Arbor

Part secondhand art supply wonderland, part educational nonprofit, Scrap Creative Reuse in Ann Arbor is one of the most inspiring creative spaces in Metro Detroit. Their workshops and weekend Crafternoon sessions invite makers of all ages and skill levels to create projects using donated and diverted materials, from reclaimed fabric and vintage buttons to paper scraps and unexpected found objects. As Claire Tyra, Executive Site Director at SCRAP Creative Reuse Ann Arbor (SCRAP A2 for short), explains, “SCRAP Creative Reuse – we are a nonprofit creative reuse center. Our mission is to inspire creative reuse and environmentally sustainable behavior by providing educational programs and affordable materials to the community. We do this through our secondhand arts and crafts store, our unique brand of Creative Reuse Education, and our volunteer program…We seek to inspire our community to use the materials in the world around them in creative ways! Our educators and staff lean into teachable moments in our studio and in our store. We are always willing to creatively problem-solve with customers and crafters! Our robust volunteer team helps staff at SCRAP manage the wonderful volume of materials that come through our doors. Our volunteers help sort and stock materials, merchandise materials in our store, build creative reuse kits, support our education programs, and help with yearly fundraisers and events. Last year, we diverted 56,348 lbs of materials from the waste stream!” Beyond the organized workshops, simply browsing the store is a creative adventure in itself, with shelves packed full of affordable, ever-rotating supplies that spark ideas you never would have expected.
