While most people choose to adopt a vegan or vegetarian diet for ethical reasons, I did so out of desperation. Years ago, as a wide-eyed freshman in college, I was so horrified by the food provided to me with my meal plan that I eliminated meat and existed on hummus and pita for approximately six months.

I don’t recommend that particular lifestyle, but it did open my eyes to alternatives to tofu and wheatgrass (i.e. veggie chicken wings). Even if you’re a carnivore, consider trying out one of the following restaurants in Metro Detroit the next time “Meatless Monday” rolls around:

If you’re curious about raw foods, look no further than Cacao Tree Café, 204 West 4th St., Royal Oak. Dishing out vegan and gluten-free fare (both dine-in and take out), the café blends fresh fruit juices and smoothies daily, and makes raw handmade chocolates and desserts from scratch.

For nearly 40 years, Seva, 314 E. Liberty, Ann Arbor, has been serving up fresh and innovative vegetarian cuisine to its patrons. A secondary location was opened in Detroit, and both offer a fully vegetarian menu, fresh juice and coffee bar. Stop by for Sunday brunch specials, or try a dish from the restaurant’s new gluten-free menu, which includes everything from yam fries to pad thai to portabella burgers.

From farm work to heavy lifting, the Chevy Silverado is built to tackle the toughest tasks with ease.

Om Café, 23136 Woodward Ave., Ferndale, serves fresh vegan, vegetarian and macrobiotic dishes daily. In addition to the usual staples like soups and salads, the menu features unique items like The Buddhist Priest Stir-Fry (a dish of udon noodles, broccoli, carrot, zucchini, yellow squash and onions) and El Mexicano (corn chips piled with pinto beans, tofu, salad toppings, cheese and avocado).

If you’re looking for a spread with variety, The Inn Season Café, 500 East 4th St., Royal Oak, is your best bet. The café features items from various cuisines, so you’ll be satisfied whether you’re hankering for American or Chinese inspired flavors. Soy burgers, stir-fries, enchiladas and spaghetti are all staples on the menu.

Now that you know where to go, load up on veggies and grains every once in awhile! With so many tasty options right at your fingertips, it makes sense to support a local restaurant while reducing your carbon footprint.
