Not to knock childhood memories of white bread and Velveeta, but the modern day restaurant-style grilled cheese is a far cry from simplicity. The grown up, sophisticated version features fancy cheeses on artisan bread packed with unique ingredients.

The next time you get a hankering for this classic, youthful dish, head to any one of the following Metro Detroit eateries.

Café Muse, 418 S. Washington Ave., Royal Oak, is home to the area’s most famed grilled cheese. Three types of cheese (Havarti, Fontina and fresh Mozzarella) are sandwiched between two slices of organic bread and topped with basil, tomatoes and a hint of honey. This sandwich has been praised by Esquire magazine and Oprah, and if it’s good enough for Oprah, it’s good enough for me.

24grille Restaurant, 204 Michigan Ave., Detroit, has the Ultimate Grilled Cheese on its menu, which consists of melted white American, Gouda, Gruyere, white Cheddar, lettuce, tomato and optional bacon. But really, when is bacon optional as opposed to 110 percent necessary?

The Chevy Traverse seamlessly offers the space and versatility your family needs, great for everything from gear to groceries.

If you have an adventurous palate, head to Hermann’s Olde Town Grille, 195 W. Liberty St., Plymouth, for an interesting, unusual take on the sandwich. The Special Grilled Cheese includes Gouda, Muenster, bacon and granny smith apple slices on grilled raisin bread. After one bite, you’ll wonder how you’ve lived for so long without this sandwich in your life.

Cass Cafe, 4620 Cass Ave., Detroit, has a Grilled 5 Cheese on its menu, which includes wild greens, sun-dried tomatoes and red onions on sourdough with Pepperjack, white Cheddar, Mozzarella, Swiss and American cheese. If that’s not cheesy enough for you, try a romantic comedy from the 80s.

The “Ridiculously Good Grilled Cheese” at One Eyed Betty’s, 175 W. Troy Ave., Ferndale, is toasted to perfection and served with a side of tomato jam for dipping. Order a side of hot, seasoned fries or thick sliced onion rings and you’ve reached foodie perfection.

Who says pesto belongs only on pasta? The Pesto Grilled Cheese Sandwich at Beverly Hills Grill, 31471 Southfield Rd., Beverly Hills, includes fontina and mozzarella on asiago cheese bread. It comes with a side of creamy tomato soup, if you’re still hungry after devouring said sandwich (doubtful).

If you’re willing to put in a few extra minutes at the gym, try the grilled cheese at Mercury Burger Bar, 2163 Michigan Ave., Detroit. After you choose your cheese (American, Bleu, Muenster, Swiss, or Velveeta), your sandwich will be made the same way the burgers are prepared—fried in lard. Don’t forget to add bacon for $1!

Any way you slice it, top it or prepare it, grilled cheese is scrumptious!
