What goes together better than Cinco de Mayo and tequila, you ask? Cinco de Mayo, tequila and a taqueria, of course.
If you’re still without plans for the fifth of May, grab your pals and head to Imperial, 22828 Woodward Ave., Ferndale, for a party that lasts all weekend long.
El dia de la Batalla, or “the day of the battle,” is an event that combines food, music and art. In addition to celebrating Cinco de Mayo, the event serves to auction off custom painted skateboards for charity, benefitting organizations like the Ferndale Football Boosters Eagles Nest and Detroit’s Downtown Youth Boxing Gym.
The festivities kick off on Friday, May 3 at 8 p.m. with an artist reception sponsored by Ferndale’s Pinwheel Bakery and Valentine Vodka. Local artists, including Antonio “Shades” Agee, Jeff Shea and Bill Jagenow, will discuss their pieces up for auction. Food and drink specials will be aplenty, so come hungry (and thirsty)!

On Saturday, May 4, food and drink specials continue at 5 p.m., as well as bidding on the skateboards.
Sunday is when the real El dia de la Batalla begins, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The day will be packed with festivities including a pig roast, Treat Dreams ice cream, hot rods on display, and merchandise for sale, including Lucha Libre masks. The auction closes on Sunday, and the lucky winners will be announced.
Why celebrate for just one day when you can enjoy local food and art all weekend long while supporting a few good causes?
Happy Cinco de Mayo!
