So, you want to go play some pool. Perhaps you’re looking to work on your combination shot, or maybe you just want to play a few games of eight-ball with your buddies (loser buys drinks). Well, guess what? You’re in luck! Metro Detroit is all about billiards. Several venues are sprinkled all over southeast Michigan; therefore, you are bound to find a place to play your game of choice.
The Loving Touch located at 22634 Woodward in Ferndale is a more “intimate” venue with pool, live music almost daily, Michigan craft beers and just an overall cozy feel. Personally, I would prefer hearing a live band or DJ playing whilst embarrassing myself on a pool table, but that may just be me. The pool tables are coin-operated and easy on the eyes with a nice golden-colored felt on top. There is an indoor atrium full of greenery as well! Ferndale is full of nightlife, so if you find yourself there I would definitely recommend venturing to The Loving Touch.
The Ivory Room, 33500 Ford Rd., Westland, may not have a website, but I feel I am qualified to talk about it. I am originally from the Wayne-Westland area, so I have been here many times with friends. It is quite spacious and reasonably priced. The 16, yes 16 pool tables are always well-maintained and the establishment offers a pretty laid back environment. It only costs $6.75 plus $1 extra per person for an hour on the pool tables. That is a steal where I come from. Don’t forget to throw some darts and order a pitcher of beer while you’re there.
Whiskey in the Jar resides at 2741 Yemans St., in Hamtramck. It is what one may consider a “dive” bar, but if you’ve read our story on dive bars you know that isn’t a negative term. I have not been here, but I’ve heard there is a fantastic jukebox, a great selection of domestic and imported beer and some stellar pool tables. Here, you can show off your skills with a pool stick, or your marksmanship with the electronic dartboard. I’ve heard that on more than one occasion a “welcome shot” has been given to first-time patrons, but don’t quote me on that. I may need to find out; however.

Snookers has locations in both Livonia and Eastpointe and is a great place for some billiards. Snooker is actually a type of billiards game. I would be lying if I told you I knew how to play, so here are the rules, but of course you may play any game of your choosing. At both the Livonia and Eastpointe sites, unlimited pool for $5 is offered Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. The Eastpointe location offers other specials Sunday through Friday; including half-off drinks on Sundays and free pool with a $10 purchase per table on Mondays.
Fifth Avenue, located at 215 Fifth St., in Royal Oak, is a lot of fun. I went here recently and was impressed with the whole place. It has two levels, both of which have several pool tables. It is a fantastic bar to go for sporting events, or just on a Saturday night. This one is often going to have a bit more of a crowd than the others on the list. The lower level is a more open space for some casual or competitive pool, but the upstairs also has tables with a gorgeous, red-colored felt. If you want to dance the night away then upstairs is the place to be. If you haven’t been here yet I am telling you it is honestly worth checking out.
Whether you are sharpening up your pool skills or just looking for something to do, these pool halls and bars are where you want to go. Rack’em up and have fun!
