If I can be completely honest here for a second it seems like nearly every person on social media believes themselves to be a world-class photographer. In reality he/she just took a picture of a lawn chair, or the family dog and put a black and white filter on it. I don’t think that quite qualifies as award-winning art, but luckily there are some options to help sharpen up your photography skills. Such things come to us in the form of photography classes, lessons or workshops. Focus, lighting, editing, etc. are all the tools you’ll need to truly know the ins and outs of the trade. Those of you who are good enough at it can possibly even make it into a career!
Robert DiTommaso Photography located at 1794 Apple Ridge Ct., in Rochester Hills offers many lessons and workshops. Individual and group photography lessons are both available. The price varies from $35 to $50 an hour based off of the number of participants, but an individual can get five 90-minute sessions for $300. If you’re looking for more of a hands-on way to learn try the “photo safaris,” which are lessons “in the field.” You can do this from your own backyard, a park, or join one of the color tours in the fall! You get photography training and beautiful scenery. What is not to like? Workshops and lessons happen every month, and there are a variety of categories for all skill levels.
Detroit Photography Training, 23158 Oberliesen St., in Clinton Township serves as a great place to learn photography in southeast Michigan. Lessons, training courses and workshops on photography and software are all available here. Detroit Photography Training doesn’t want to waste your time, so seminars get straight to the point. That is something to look forward to in my opinion. There are several photography classes for beginners, intermediates and pros. Let’s not forget about the three software courses offered. The really cool thing is that the photography workshops are actually photo shoots, so the students get hands-on experience! Check out the full schedule for times and dates.
Midwest Photography Workshops located at 28830 W. 8 Mile Rd., in Farmington Hills is a trusted place for photography lessons. MPW has been providing workshops and classes for Metro Detroit since 1970 and is still going strong. The classes and workshops fall into three categories: evening classes, weekend workshops and photo safari trips. Evening classes generally meet four to six sessions from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. and are offered to all skill levels. More than 200 weekend workshops are offered at MPW and quite often will be in a studio or on location for daylong shooting. The photo safaris often provide opportunities for students to travel out of the state and even out of the country! All skill levels are welcomed for the safaris. Check out the calendar for upcoming courses and workshops.

David Birdsong Photography resides at 28 N. Saginaw St., Suite 905 in Pontiac and is another great option to learn the art and technique of photography. Birdsong has more than 30 years of experience and is well-known for his work in fashion and photographing models. His hands-on workshops teach techniques such as studio lighting, working with models, location shooting and more. The number of participants is usually kept low to allow everyone to ask questions and work directly with Birdsong. The three-hour long workshops are sure to be fun and teach you exactly what you need to know. Click here to see what is coming up next.
So, the next time you feel the urge to take a shot of your lamp, or your bicycle, remember you can go to any of the aforementioned places (or others in the area) to learn what truly makes a good picture.
