The Detroit Zoo stays open all year long, so although you could have easily went and checked out the animals on a frigid winter day, I think we can all agree zoos are best experienced in the warmth.

With that being said, perhaps you are interested in what is going down on the Royal Oak property this summer. Plenty of events are taking place. Let’s get right to to it.

Sunset at the Zoo: Howling at the Moon  is an annual gala event (last year’s event was called “Sunset Boardwalk Bash”). Tickets to this event are much pricier than that of normal zoo events, but let me explain what Sunset at the Zoo has to offer. Telling you about the Champagne welcome and the hosted bar featuring “zoo-themed” specialty drinks is a good place to start. Supper and dessert featuring fantastic food from more than 40 Metro Detroit restaurants is probably the greatest of selling points. Don’t forget about the entertainment provided by the Detroit Flyhouse, The Jerry Ross Band and more! All proceeds support the zoo’s future wolf habitat. This event is this Friday, June 13 at 7 p.m. and is for patrons 21 years of age and older.

Wild Summer Nights is a concert series starting on Wednesday, July 2 and plays every Wednesday night through the month of August! The concerts rock out in the Main Picnic Grove from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Local acts from a variety of genres, such as country, jazz, pop, children’s and more will play at Wild Summer Nights. Concerts are free with admission to the zoo and food and drinks (including beer and wine) are available to purchase for your consuming pleasure. Check out the zoo website to see the full schedule of performers.

Summer Zoomance invites the 21 and up crowd out for a night of zoo fun once again! There are two different days for Summer Zoomance: Thursday, July 10 and Thursday, August 21. Both of these events go from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Enjoy a cash bar, complimentary tram rides, zookeeper talks, animal enrichment and live music! Tickets for both the July and August gatherings go on sale on Monday, June 16. They are $12 during the presale and $14 after that (check link above to see when each presale ends).

Wild Beasts, Wild Wine allows you to try more than 40 different wines from wineries and vineyards from Michigan and all over the country. In addition, Wild Wine attendees get the opportunity to check out the Detroit Zoo’s award-winning habitats at Twilight. Live music, complimentary tram tours, animal enrichment and zookeeper talks also come with the ticket. Tickets go on sale on Monday, June 16. Your purchase includes admission, parking and 10 sample drink tickets. All of this can be yours for $35 ($40 after July 18). Additional drink (sample) tickets and food will be available for purchase.

As an honorable mention, Memberfest invites the Detroit Zoo’s members to visit animals and observe the animals at Twilight! The date is to be determined.

The Detroit zoo is a great place for fun, education and family-bonding all at one time. What are you waiting for? Go!
