On the rare occasion that your social calendar isn’t already packed to the gills this weekend, here’s a piece of advice: head to a local comedy club for a night of laughs. I promise you, it’s one of the best ways you can possibly spend a Friday or Saturday night, especially if you can make a night out of it with some of your best friends.
Where do you think those comedians who take the stage and leave you in stitches get their starts? Probably at a young age making their parents double over in laughter, but I’m sure most of them headed to an open mic night once or twice in their day as well. Practice makes perfect! If you’re an aspiring comedian, or a seasoned one who simply needs to try out a few new jokes on a live audience, head to an open mic comedy night in the D. Here are a few of your options:
New Way Bar, 23130 Woodward Ave., Ferndale, finally gives you a reason to look forward to Mondays, as the first day of the workweek is when the bar holds its open mic comedy night. Comedians can register at 10:15 p.m and the show begins 15 minutes later. Amit Jain hosts the shindig each week, and there is no cover charge for participants or attendees.
Joey’s Comedy Club, 36071 Plymouth Rd., Livonia, is my personal favorite place to catch a comedy show, but I can’t speak from personal experience about “The World’s Greatest Open Mic!” which takes place on Tuesday nights. You can call the box office Tuesday through Thursday to sign up for a slot, which will get you five minutes up on the stage.
Metromix has named Joey’s Best Comedy Club in Michigan in years past, so who knows; you could get your big break at open mic night.
Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase, 212 S. 4th Ave., Ann Arbor, holds its open mic night, or Comedy Jamm, on Wednesdays. Since stage time here is so sought after, performances are picked randomly via a drawing. In order to be considered, call the box office the week before you wish to perform, and your name will be entered into the drawing.
Come Wednesday, open mic performers must be ready by 7:45 p.m., as the show begins promptly at 8 p.m.! You’ll get about three to five minutes of stage time.
Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle, 310 S. Troy St., Royal Oak, allows you to test out your comedic chops on Wednesday nights during open mic nights. If you’re not quite stage ready, consider signing up for a class at the Comedy Castle where you can learn the ropes.
You’ll be learning from the best, as local comedian Bill Bushart leads six-week stand-up classes and workshops here, as well as various other venues in Metro Detroit. Check out his official site for more details.
Laff Tracks, 30850 Beck Rd., Novi, calls itself “Detroit’s hidden jewel of stand up,” and is one venue you don’t want to miss out on when it comes to testing out your new material. Open mic night, or as they call it here at Laff Tracks, the “Rising Stars Comedy Showcase,” is held every Thursday. The doors open at 8 p.m. and the show starts a half hour later. Admission costs $5, but the good news is, if you go to the show with a friend, you’ll get a discount. On Thursday nights, admission is buy one, get one free.
