Have you been looking to add a new edition to the family lately? You’ll have a chance to do so at the Detroit Zoo this weekend by adopting a new pet. Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo takes place this Friday, Sept. 18 (1 p.m. to 7 p.m.) and Saturday, Sept. 19 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
The event is one of the largest off-site companion animal adoption events in the entire nation. Hundreds of dog, cats, kittens and puppies looking for a loving home and family will be available for immediate adoption. This event is special for both the animals and humans involved.
“This is a wonderful event that brings together animal lovers and welfare organizations to find loving homes for animals in need of adoption, on the site of an organization that carries a mission of celebrating and saving animals,” Jennie Miller, communications manager at the Detroit Zoo, said.
According to Miller, more than 30 local animal welfare organizations will collaborate with the Detroit Zoological Society and Michigan Humane Society to help put the event on. Organizations include the Michigan Animal Adoption Network, P.O.E.T. Animal rescue, WAG Animal Rescue and many more.

Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo is in its 22nd year. It is semi-annual and has been extremely successful in the past. With events in both the fall and spring of each year, the Detroit Zoo has helped find homes for thousands of animals over the past two decades.
“Last year, the fall event found homes for 624 animals,” Miller said. “Since the event’s inception in 1993, more than 21,000 dogs, cats and rabbits have been placed into new homes.”
Ages and breeds of the animals vary, some of which will be spayed/neutered, while others may not be. According to Miller, all dogs and cats have received a medical check-up and age-appropriate vaccinations.
There are a couple other things to know if you are looking to adopt. First, the price of each animal varies by participating group. Secondly, adopters must present a valid driver’s license or state identification card.
The event is held outdoors under tents in the zoo’s front parking lot (beneath the landmark water tower). There is no charge for admission or parking for the event, but regular admission and parking fees for the zoo still apply.
If you are looking to make a difference in both your life and an animal’s life, then this is your chance. Thanks to the Detroit Zoo and Michigan Humane Society, hundreds of animals will know the feeling of being loved.
