The Detroit City Football Club has called Detroit’s Cass Tech High stadium home since it began in 2012, but it’s time for a change. This Thursday, DCFC owners will unveil a community-based financing plan to make Hamtramck’s Keyworth Stadium the new home of Detroit City FC.
The “Keyworth Kickoff” campaign, presented by your Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers, takes place at The Fowling Warehouse at 7 p.m., and will allow supporters to directly loan money to DCFC and earn interest on their loan, growing both their club and community.
While Cass Tech High School has been a great home for Detroit City FC for three years, the team and its supporters have outgrown the space at this point.
“Keyworth Stadium represents the best option for the next chapter in the continuing story of Detroit City FC,” Donovan Powell, general manager of DCFC, said. “The stadium gives our club a new home where we can continue our organic, grassroots growth while providing our supporters with the urban match day atmosphere that has become the signature of the club.”
Thursday’s event will help raise funds for initial renovation work, including structural improvements to the grandstand, repair of wooden bleachers, rehabilitation of locker rooms and public restrooms, repair of field lighting and grooming of the field turf. The initial rehabilitation work should be completed prior to the start of the 2016 season, and will provide seating capacity of 6,000.
As any Detroit City FC supporter knows, one of the biggest pre-home match rituals is the march from Harry’s to Cass Tech Stadium. While a move would certainly change that, Powell envisions that match days would continue to be an event that starts long before kickoff.
“Once inside the stadium, a visitor would experience a sporting space the likes of which they just don’t make anymore… Le Rouge supporters would not only experience electrifying action on the field in an unmatched setting, they would also be treated to a wider array of food trucks, concessions, merchandise and adult beverage tents, all at a scale not conceivable at our current venue,” he said.
