The Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak is always a place Metro Detroiters can count on for fun, no matter the season. What some people may not realize is that the Detroit Zoo remains open all year! With the winter season not too far away, the zoo is gearing up for its slate of seasonal events. Let’s go over a few of these happenings in more detail, shall we?
Wild Lights at the Detroit Zoo is a 24-night long event, which begins on Friday, Nov. 20 and runs each Friday, Saturday and Sunday through New Year’s Eve. More than 5 million LED lights illuminate the premises, making for a breathtaking site. Live entertainment, arts and crafts, ice carving and more add to the event’s ambiance. Make sure to purchase tickets in advance!

Breakfast with Santa takes place on Dec. 5, Dec. 12 and Dec. 19 – all of which are Saturdays. The buffet-style waffle breakfast takes place in the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery and goes from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m., with breakfast served at 8:15 a.m. Children will also receive a gift. Other activities, such as arts and crafts and a visit from Santa, will take place as well.
Dinner with Santa is on Friday, Dec. 18 and Saturday, Dec. 19 from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Similar to the breakfast event, the buffet-style dinner also takes place at the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery and each child receives a special gift. In addition to the meal and other fun activities with Santa Claus, admission to Wild Lights is free!
Polar Beers is on Thursday, Dec. 10 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Unfortunately, it is already sold out. Those attending the 21 and up event will enjoy craft beers from breweries all over Michigan while taking in the sites of the Wild Lights display.
As always, the Detroit Zoo provides a fun atmosphere no matter the time of year. These hot events will be sure to keep you warm during the colder months. As evidenced by Polar Beers, these events sell out quickly, so be sure to grab your tickets as soon as possible or you’ll be sorry!
