It is early January, which means one thing for automotive enthusiasts everywhere – it’s time for the 2016 North American International Auto Show to begin!
Arguably the biggest event in the automotive industry, this year’s auto show starts today and continues through Sunday, Jan. 24 at the Cobo Center. The public show opens on Saturday, Jan. 16. Tickets cost $13 for adults and $7 for both seniors (ages 65 and older) and children (ages 7 to 12). Children ages 6 and younger are free.
Daily Activities
In addition to the gorgeous cars throughout the show, there are a ton of daily activities going on throughout the show’s duration.
The American Red Cross will be having a blood drive from Saturday, Jan. 16 through Monday, Jan. 18, as well as on Saturday, Jan. 23. The blood drive takes place inside the Cobo Center from 2 p.m. through 7:45 p.m. on those days.
Cars on Parade, presented by The Parade Company, takes place each day during the public show at 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The parade features luxury automobiles, local stars and personalities, and even clowns.
Other daily activities include MLive Day on Saturday, Jan. 16 and Military Day on Tuesday, Jan. 19. MLive Day provides complimentary photo booths for attendees, and kicks off the NAIAS Photo Contest that will run the length of the show, with prizes provided. With ID, Military Day offers discounted tickets to members of the military.
In addition, Education Days, open to school groups of all ages, is on Wednesday, Jan. 20. Players on the Detroit Tigers, along with mascot Paws, make a stop in their Winter Caravan on Friday, Jan. 22.
Other Things to Look For
Chevrolet will debut the Bolt EV at this year’s auto show. It is the next-generation of pure electric vehicles for Chevrolet. Be sure to check it out, and keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming feature on the vehicle right here on “In the D.”
Something else to look out for is the CARved ice sculptures located at Campus Martius Park. Full-sized ice sculptures of seven cars will be present, including a 1957 Chevy Nomad! The event is part of the Quicken Loans Season of Winter magic.
