Mmmm bar-b-cue. Or is it bar-b-que? What am I saying? So long as it’s tasty and cooked to perfection, I don’t care how it’s spelled. Being a fan of BBQ food in metro Detroit has its perks with plenty of great places to get a fix of pulled pork, BBQ ribs, mac and cheese, baked chicken and…oh sorry, I was day-dreaming.
Before I drift off again, here are a few places we think are worth checking out if you’re a fan of that smoked, delicious goodness! Now, excuse me while I plan my next meal…or ten.
If you want BBQ prepared fresh every day, look no further than Woodpile BBQ Shack in Clawson. Steve Coddington, or as Woodpile likes to call him, “Bubba,” is an award-winning chef when it comes to the realm of BBQ. All of Woodpile’s meat is smoked overnight the night before so it can take its time to cook and absorb all that BBQ flavor. The best part? Woodpile takes its name seriously and only uses wood smoke when cooking its food. To some, that might mean nothing, but a BBQ aficionado will know the flavor that comes from wood smoked meat and let’s just say it’s nothing to pass up!
Oh, and did I mention there’s housemade ice cream?

Nunn’s Bar-B-Que is a family-run establishment through and through. Wiley Nunn opened Nunn’s in 1984 and ran the restaurant with his son, Al Nunn, until 2004 when a tragic fire trapped Wiley in the restaurant. Nunn’s remained closed for about two years while Al worked on rebuilding the restaurant and now it serves up great, charcoal-grilled BBQ food. If you find yourself in the area (Conant St. in Detroit), be sure to stop by and say hi to Al! Even if BBQ isn’t on your mind, I’m sure Al can win you over with homemade desserts like peach cobbler, banana pudding or sweet potato pie.
The specialty at Vicki’s Bar-B-Q are the juicy pork spareribs. What makes these pork spareribs special is more than 57 years of BBQ experience and Vicki’s special BBQ sauce. It’s sweet and tangy and sure to leave a lasting impression on you.
If spareribs aren’t your thing, then Vicki’s has one more trick up its sleeve: specialty shrimp. For years, Vicki’s has been serving up French fried shrimp as a delectable alternative to its pork spareribs. A French fried shrimp meal includes a half-pound of shrimp, a 3.5 oz. side of coleslaw and a hefty helping of steak fries.
