April Fools’ Day is this Saturday, so all of you pranksters out there are probably cooking up some good jokes to play on the gullible people in your lives. Talking about jokes and pranks got us thinking about some of the upcoming comedy shows and improv nights in the area, and since laughter is the best medicine, you’re definitely going to want to check these out!
Detroit Laugh City is providing Detroit with the best stand-up comedy around and this week they’ll be bringing actor, writer, and stand-up comedian Dwayne Kennedy to the Underground DIME on Wednesday, March 29. Kennedy has written for such shows as “The Arsenio Hall Show,” “The Orlando Jones Show,” and “Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell.” His debut EP, “Oh No, It’s Dwayne Kennedy,” is available now and local favorites Tom McCarthy and Tonya Murray will open the show.
The newly renovated Planet Ant has been a go to place to see some of the area’s most talented improv comedians. The new and bigger Ant Hall hosts a weekly Saturday Night Improv where two improv teams perform and then conclude with an open improv jam.
This Royal Oak comedy showcase is known for their weekly stand-up shows, twice a month open mic nights, and their outside the box comedy events. This upcoming weekend they will be welcoming comedian Tom Cotter for four shows starting on Thursday. Cotter has been on the rise since finishing in second on “America’s Got Talent” in 2012 and has appeared on numerous late night talk shows.

The Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase is known for its weekly Comedy Jamm shows where it showcases rising comedy stars in metro Detroit, but every weekend the establishment also welcomes professional stand-up comedians for some very entertaining sets. This week they will be welcoming David Dyer who has contributed to shows such as “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” “Bob and Tom Show,” and “ABC’s Politically Incorrect.” He also has strong ties to Michigan as he is a winner of the Grand Rapids Magazine Comedy Joke Off. He also has recurring characters on “The Kevin Matthew’s Morning Show” on 97 WLAV FM in Grand Rapids.
Go Comedy! Improv Theater has unique improv shows almost every night, and this week they will have “The Interviewees” on Friday and Saturday, “Name This Show” also on Friday and Saturday, and their special “All-Star Showdown” happening throughout the weekend.
