Earth Day is a day dedicated to promoting the sustainability of our planet and it’s coming up fast! April 22 to be exact. How will you be celebrating Earth Day and lending a helping hand to the planet we call home? What? You don’t have any plans!? Allow me to help you with that. Here are four Earth Day events happening right here in metro Detroit.

Michigan Earth Day Fest

Michigan Earth Day Fest kicks Earth Day celebrations off a day early in downtown Rochester on April 21 and runs through April 23. As more than just an educational and cleanup initiative, Michigan Earth Day Fest also includes opportunities to purchase dozens of green/wellness products from vendors and local food suppliers and farmers. There will also be live music and activities for kids, not to mention prizes! Best of all? It’s free!

GreenFest at the Detroit Zoo

The Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak will be joining the Earth Day celebrations on April 22 by hosting GreenFest, an initiative to educate the masses about sustainability and more. Some of the activities you will be able to partake in include chemistry demos, worm composting education, zookeeper talks and more. The event is free with zoo admission. In honor of Earth Day, if you bring a cell phone for recycling, your admission price will be reduced to $9.

Midtown Community Cleanup

Join Midtown Detroit Inc. for the Midtown Community Cleanup on April 22 from 8 a.m. till 12 p.m. This is a volunteer event to clean up areas within Detroit’s Midtown district. Lunch and cleaning supplies will be provided. For more information, check out this Facebook event page or the above link.

All of these events are great ways to take part and celebrate Earth Day, but what about the rest of the year? Check out Recycle Michigan for useful information on what can and cannot be recycled. Become a member of the Michigan Recycling Coalition to stay abreast on the latest recycling legislation and more. And, as always, be mindful of the small ways you can increase Earth’s sustainability, like returning cans/bottles at the supermarket, using a filter for your tap water instead of bottled water, replacing light bulbs with energy efficient ones and staying in the know on what your community is or is not doing to help the planet.
