For many folks, going on a “real vacation” can be so stressful that it ends up feeling more like work and less like a vacation at all. That’s why “staycations” are a great (and typically cheaper) alternative when you’re just trying to have some time to yourself. If you’re planning on taking some time off from work, but don’t necessarily want to go through the hassle of a full-blown vacation, there are some great, fun things you could be doing right here in metro Detroit!

Visit a Metropark

What better way to go on a staycation in Michigan than with a little bit of the great outdoors? The Huron-Clinton Metroparks of Southeast Michigan have tons of great attractions. There’s the Go Ape! Zipline & Treetop Adventure at Stony Creek Metropark in Washington. Channel your inner Tarzan by making and swinging your way through the forest treetops. Enjoy a quiet horseback stroll through the beauty of Michigan at Wolcott Mill Metropark’s equestrian trails.

Go Kayaking/Canoeing

Speaking of water, there are plenty of great places to spend some time on the water, and kayaking & canoeing are a fun and affordable activities to enjoy outside. Village Canoe Rental is located near the Huron River in Milford, has beautiful scenic forestry abound and picnic tables to enjoy something to eat. In Ann Arbor, the Argo and Gallup Canoe Liveries on the Huron River are prime destinations for fun on the water. Notably, the Argo Cascades are fun for those looking for a more than a leisurely trip down the stream.

Stay at a Bed & Breakfast

The great outdoors are, well, great and all, but sometimes you just want to kick back and relax. A couple of great, local B&Bs are Burnt Toast Inn in Ann Arbor and Cobblestone Manor in Auburn Hills. Burnt Toast Inn has eight rooms across two properties and is located very close to Ann Arbor’s Main St., so you’re always a short trip from shopping, arts and entertainment when staying here. Cobblestone Manor lives in a beautifully restored building with all the usual amenities, but hosts Paul and Heather Crandall put care into making each guest’s stay not just enjoyable, but memorable, too.

Visit a Museum

It goes without saying that a visit to the DIA is something that should be on everyone’s “bucket list.” But, what about some of the lesser known, but equally fascinating museums in metro Detroit? Detroit may be known for the automobile, but Michigan also has a rich history in the railroad industry and the Michigan Transit Museum in Mt. Clemens is the perfect spot to learn a thing or two about it. Over in Dearborn, you can find the Arab American National Museum, which is perfect for anyone looking to learn the history of Arab Americans and gain insight into the backgrounds of other minority groups in America.

Get to Know Detroit Craft Beer

For us metro Detroiters, it’s no secret that we know craft beer. To help you get a taste of the craft beer scene in metro Detroit, we recommend a brew tour from the folks at Motor City Brew Tours. They have a tour coming up this Saturday, May 27 in Royal Oak, where they will visit four breweries, enjoying samples from each stop along the way.
