When it comes to fall, a couple of things come to mind: leaves beautifully changing their colors, carving pumpkins, Halloween, cider mills and hard cider (for those of us that enjoy a hard beverage in our down time but don’t love the hoppiness or carbonation of beer). Those that enjoy a good hard cider may like it for the sometimes-sweet,  sometimes-tart, always-delicious flavors or maybe for the light carbonation or the refreshing feeling. Whatever your reason, count yourself lucky that metro Detroit is a great place to find breweries making their own, delicious hard cider.

This Ferndale-based brewery might specialize in brewing meads, but that doesn’t mean they don’t make a mean cider. With several ciders on tap in the taproom, finding the right one for you is a cinch. Zombie Killer is an apple-cherry hard cider that is tart yet sweet. Slice of Life is an apple cider that is complemented by zesty ginger and tart lemon juice. The Dude’s Rug is a chai tea lover’s dream: hard cider + tea + chai spices = a cider that is quintessentially fall.

Fieldstone Hard Cider Co.

Fieldstone Hard Cider Co. in Rochester does one thing and one thing well: hard cider. They’d have to with a name like that, right? Sourcing their ingredients from local farmers in Oakland and Macomb County, Fieldstone is dedicated to their craft. The taproom has a rotating selection with a good variety of flavor profiles. The G.P.A. (ginger peach apple) is known as a semi-dry cider, while Batch36 is Fieldstone’s signature dry cider. Stop in for a taste and take a 32-oz growler home with you!

Located next door to Parmenter’s Cider Mill, Northville Winery & Brewing Co. has been around since 1982. In June 2012 a tap room was added, which is the perfect place to get all of their hard ciders straight from the tap. Rockin’ Cock is a classic hard apple cider. Blue River is a nitro-brewed blueberry apple hard cider. Scary Spice is a cinnamon and nutmeg cider. Enjoy these and other hard ciders while listening to live music or enjoying a donut from the cider mill next door.

One of the gems of Hazel Park, Cellermen’s is a brewer of cider, mead and beer. They abstain from using extracts, concentrates or flavorings in favor of actual ingredients and when it comes to cider, it all starts with fresh Michigan apples. There are a couple classic flavors found in the Traditional Dry and Semi-Sweet Ciders. If you’re looking to try something a little different, ask about the Ethiopian Limu Coffee Cider. Availability changes based on the seasonal availability of the ingredients, but rest assured there’s always something good on tap.

Remember to drink responsibly and plan ahead with a designated driver or take advantage of one of these local designated driving services.
