It’s not every day you see true works of art. Sure, you listen to your favorite music, watch your favorite movies and television shows, but when was the last time you stood in front of a piece of art that truly transcended you? Seeing the works of talented artists, whether it’s paintings, drawings, or sculptures, can make for an incredibly rewarding experience. Luckily for you, there are a lot of those experiences happening in Detroit over the next couple of weeks. Here are five upcoming metro Detroit art shows and exhibitions that will blow you away.
The Comeback Kid: Scenes from the Motor City (1/12)
The ever changing landscape of Detroit is prime for some breathtaking pieces of art, and that’s what The Comeback Kid: Scenes from the Motor City will showcase. Taking place at the Tangent Gallery tonight, January 12, over 20 artists will show off their works of art ranging from photographs, to canvas paintings, and hand-designed clothing. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted at the door to benefit the Detroit Impact Center.
Loess Opening Exhibition (1/13)
This solo exhibition taking place at the Oloman Cafe will showcase Suraj Bhamra’s impressive prints along with his new book, “Loess.” The book, along with his exquisite art, showcase the immigrant identity and symbols of pride in Hamtramck.
Betwixt and Between: Figurative Work of Jan Brown (1/13, 1/20, 1/27)
Hatch Art in Hamtramck will be showcasing the work of Jan Brown every Saturday in January starting at noon. Her abstract expressionist art will be on full display as this show will feature her fascination with the human body and how she can cross it between figurative and abstract. Edgar Bryan: Sea Creatures (through 1/20)
Los Angeles based artist Edgar Bryan will bring his Sea Creatures showcase to Reyes Projects in Birmingham through Saturday, January 20. The show will feature a selection of brightly hued paintings and ceramic sculptures reminiscent of the ocean on a summer day. You can find a preview of the art on the event’s website.
Matisse Drawings (through 2/18)
The University of Michigan Museum of Art will showcase Matisse Drawings curated by Ellsworth Kelly from the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection through Sunday, February 18. The curated show will feature rarely exhibited drawings and paintings from Henri Matisse and Ellsworth Kelly. You can find a preview of the art here.
