There is no denying that metro Detroiters’ are tough. The ability to survive the winter we’ve been having is just one example. The snow never seemed to stop, temperatures continued to drop, and driving was a stress-filled adventure. Even through all of that, metro Detroiters have found a way to keep things fun and interesting. From throwing axes at a target, to plunging into freezing water for charity, these fun and unique activities will keep you entertained until spring hits.

Axe Throwing

Though it has only been open for a few months, Detroit Axe has quickly become a popular activity for metro Detroiters. You’ll be able to get in from the cold and heat up with a little axe throwing between you and your friends. The establishment also has food and drink for you to enjoy throughout your match. You can book your own lane which comes with a comprehensive training session and an “Axemaster” dedicated solely to your event.

Winter Fat Tire Biking

Oakland County Parks can entertain you and your family not only in the summer, but in the winter as well. Their new winter activity is Winter Fat Tire Biking at Addison Oaks County Park, and it’s exactly what you think it is. You’ll be able to enjoy groomed trails and a smoother ride than the typical mountain bike. It’s a great way to experience the beauty of the park during the winter months.

Platform Tennis

Thanks to more winter fun from Oakland County Parks, you don’t have to wait any longer to enjoy outdoor tennis. Waterford Oaks is home to Platform Tennis, the only racquet sport that can be played outdoors in cold weather. It might seem weird to play outdoor tennis in February, but Platform Tennis is a great way to stay on top of your game before spring arrives.

Polar Plunge

Chances are that you have heard of polar plunges across the country, but what makes the upcoming Michigan Law Enforcement Polar Plunge noteworthy is that it’s for a great cause. The annual fundraiser will take place at the Belle Isle Boat House and proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics Michigan. For more information on how you can sign up to take the plunge or donate to the fundraiser, visit the event’s Facebook or fundraiser page.

Detroit Curling Club

With the winter Olympics taking the country by storm, one of the sports experiencing a peak in interest is curling. The sport that many Americans didn’t understand or want to partake in is now gaining momentum, and you can experience it for yourself at the Detroit Curling Club in Ferndale. The club welcomes players of all skill levels, whether you’re just starting out or need to hone your skills. The club hosts leagues for all ages, so be sure to find out more about them here.

Family Nature Programs

Those with little ones might have a hard time finding something kids want to do in the winter, but the Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission has been putting on fun activities all winter long. They’ve put on a walk and snap photo hike, an ice fishing derby, and even a hunt for the yeti competition, and they’re not done yet. Their final weekend will include the Junior Naturalist: Michigan Mammals at Rolling Hills Park on Saturday, February 24 and the Late Winter Hike at Baker Woods Preserve the following day. Both are great and different activities for you and your family to enjoy before the winter months end!
